My original reply was to someone who was basically saying we should ignore it. My response was saying that we can't. So what's the beef then?

Could they to an external check, fuel it up, and send it to a military base?

Smallpox only become infective after the rash develops. Since the rash normally develops in the oral mucosa first, it is a bit harder to notice. But anyone who knows what to look for will easily recognize the telltale signs of the disease. Also, the rash form AFTER a 2-3 day prodromal stage which is characterized by very high fever, malaise and muscle aches.
I've given 4 links to further information.

The tipster identified a passenger by name and said the individual had smallpox, Miles said. If the tipster actually identified someone on the plane by name and that person was on the plane, there is more to this than a simple hoax.
Knowing the name of a passenger on a flight means the tipster either knows the person and that the person was on the flight (could still be a hoax, but could be sincere) or did some research to find out names of people on the flight to use in a hoax.
Either way it is not a typical joke bomb scare type phone call.

Well since Russia and America were named and I guessed Iraq and China who exactly are you saying is the other??

Hmmmm.... Well? If this should come to pass, all I know to do is pray, and hope others with the know how, can come up with the best solution.
Not that I'm afraid, this particular news could be a hoax, but it might be wise to err on the side of caution.
I wonder what's going on with that plane right now?

or did some research to find out names of people on the flight to use in a hoax. Airlines don't just give out the names on a passenger list. You have to know, or be on the inside.

Sorry Nita, I seem to be stepping all over your toes on this thread! I wasn't really reading things as I posted. ;-)
I just saw some pretty inaccurate information being given and I wanted to correct it.

And, just to be negative about this, how perfect is it that the plane lets people off in Seattle and then in New Jersey? Both coasts. And, we just completed wiping out the Taleban, and the days they warned about in the last warning are starting at sundown this evening.

What about carriers? What if this guy is a carrier who shows no symptoms, like a Typhoid Mary sent to spread the germ?

The real question now will be what they do with him.At the very least, they should take his photograph, ask him where he will be in the next three weeks, make sure that the names and whereabouts of all passengers and crew is known, cross their fingers and be hyper-alert to any smallpox-like prodromes in the next three weeks, especially in the passengers'and crew's communities..
Of course, this would take focus, commitment, and common sense

The problem is, different people have different thresholds of pain and differing onset of symptoms.
I am sure a doctor could identify the oral mucosa rash, but there could be people who still go about their business depite muscle aches and the like.
The point is, not to scare anyone, but to realize that people who have no idea they have small pox could easily unknowingly transmit it.

You're not thinking along the correct lines but let's just say that we should have never stopped vaccinating, not for 200 or more years. It's not gone.
