If part of the package that sells an idea is a prediction or a promise of victory, of smashing the "enemy", then one can weaken that idea and cut its support to just a small group of true believers by falsifying that prediction. Islamic militant preachers in Pakistan continue to call for uprisings, demonstrations, jihad against the infidels (us), but they are getting smaller and smaller turnouts. This is not because we have convinced them with our rhetoric or given them aid and shown we are good people, but because their predictions of either military triumph or at least of holding the Great Satan to a stalemate have proven false in Afghanistan. The Palestinians and their supporters have attacked repeatedly, and always lost, always suffered more damage then they have managed to inflict. Another lesson, and, who knows, maybe they'll get it.
