I watched C-Span this morning for over an hour. The telephone call topic was: Should the FBI be given more powers to fight terroism.

I was dumbstruck by the callers' comments: Whatever it takes to make us safer, etc.

I'd say 90% of the callers didn't see a problem with the feds spying on churches.

I felt doomed.

Why would the FBI "spy on churches"?

Also, if it was known that churches (for example) were strictly off-limits to the FBI or any kind of surveillance, why wouldn't they become havens for terrorists who want to plan attacks in peace and quiet?
Just asking.

I'd quote Franklin on safety vs liberty, but I've been told on other threads that ole Ben was a good guy but he's irrelevant because he never faced the kind of "dire situation" we find ourselves in today. Makes you wonder....

I'd say that's a natural reaction after the way radical mosques have abused their privileged position under the First Amendment. Can you suggest an alternative?

Have you noticed how many government disinformation diruptor slugs have crawled out of their holes on this thread tonight. They must really be touchy and desperate and very, very paranoid...

Easy liberty is doomed! From now on keeping and restoring liberty will be hard and costly. The masses have made their choice...security over liberty. For years now those born here were not born free. We who are alive see liberty shrinkng every day. The only option is secession by a state or states somewhere based on the return to a strict interpretation of the constitution.

Sheeple, plain and simple, there are even some in this thread that feel that way. They won't be feeling that way when it's their churches and groups being spied on. Anybody who thinks this will simply be used against terrorists is wrong. We'll have another mcveigh type or somebody blowing up an abortion clinic and then those Christians who don't think any of this applies to them will find their churches and gatherings monitored by the government.

I'm looking at making myself a tin-hat.

I had such high hopes for Bush, Ashcroft, and company. Now they are acting like a bunch of left-wingers, wanting the government to have the ability to roll over anybody they please.

Fred Mertz, I have been feeling the same way for some time now--it's almost as though we're not only being attacked by foreign terrorists, but also from within. I pray that these new "powers" are not permanent, but if they work anything like "temporary" taxes, we've lost a great deal since September 11th.
