Think about it -- nobody knows for sure what all is in it! What if we would all be healthier had this been allowed at birth?

There's blood in it. As it turns out it cycles through the at aproximately 120 times a minute. I wouldn't suppose that 1/120 of a second of blood is any more important that the preceding 1/120 of a second the next 1/120 of a second. Do you?

Science is pretty damn cool, huh?

There is a whole world of possibility for adult stem cells, however, pluripotent stem cells, such a blood cell precursors, are not totipotent like a blastocyst stem cell. Basically, this means that the blood precursor does NOT have the ability to turn into EVERY cell type, but can turn in many. The blastocyst cell, on the other hand, is still in at a stage where it can differentiate into any cell type, and this is why they are important.

This point is clearly illustrated by this case. Sickle cell anemia occurs because of a genetic substitution where the codon for a valine is switched for a glutimate. This causes the Hb molecule to be bend. Unfortunately, this also causes the sickled appearance of the cells. If one could get an ALREADY differentiated blood cell procursor and placed it in the right place, as in this case, then of course healthy blood cells could be made. However, this differentiated blood precursor cell from the embilical cord, could not make, a neural cell because it is too far differentiated, and this is why science is still looking at 128 day or less stem cells.

And God created that pretty cool science. Then He set before us blessing and curses, life and death and told us to choose life. Since He's already spoken on this matter, I'll go with Him. After all, if science were my god, my god would be too small.

Luke 14:1-4

14:1 And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him.

14:2 And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.

14:3 And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?

14:4 And they held their peace. And he took [him], and healed him, and let him go;

People always seem to have a misconception that Christians are opposed to science, technology, progress, etc.

It's not these things create problems for me; it's the application of such things.

Bump to you, anniegetyourgun

God has spoken on stem cell research? The Bible seems quite silent on the issue of stem cell research.

But not on the taking of human life.

What is "human" life then?

Does no one find it even strange in the article that his blood type was changed? That is DNA altering if you ask me. I wonder what else was changed in his body? I have a problem with DNA altering. Just an opinion. I am happy he is alive.

The boy was given stem cells with a different DNA than he was born with, but that doesn't mean that all of the boy's DNA was altered in some freakish way. Time will tell if the DNA of the stem cells is compatable with his own or if the DNA of the stem cells are pre-disposed to cancers such as leukemia.

What I am concerned about. He was not totally drained of his own blood. Therefore they had to do something either on purpose, on accident or something to keep him from going into hemolytic shock. Meaning his normal bloodtype clumping together with the new bloodtype of B. There was DNA changes done. Had to have been.

stem cells may one day be able

I own stock in a couple of these companies. It didn't cost much, but who knows; I may one day be able to sell said stock at a profit. Could happen.

Some blood types are compatable with others. For instance if the kid was AB before the change he is compatibile with all blood types. It just depends on the original blood type and and the new blood type.

This link gives a pretty simple explanation if you're not already familiar

I doesn't count, we didn't have to take a human life to do it.

Yeah I researched somemore...He could have had A or B recessive. Just an odd occurance. Mothers who are RH Neg and babies that are RH Pos at birth have blood transfusions to match their mothers. So I will admit I was wrong. Just seemed to set off bells for me is all.

"Or that if they had a problem, I would be guaranteed that there would be enough donors and somebody would match them, that would be perfectly reasonable. But I don't think anybody has that crystal ball."

What donors? This is cord blood. If it isn't harvested, it's just thrown away. Harvesting it is not an invasive procedure or an intrusion on property rights (who stole my umbilical?). If people want to keep it themselves, fine. If they don't... just let the blood banks have it. Why on earth don't the blood banks just set about harvesting and storing as much as is necessary?

I am very happy that no human life was taking. As long as no human DNA manipulation is being done. I am generally okay with the medical procedures being done.

Just a question, but if that blood in the cord is so valuable, wouldn't it make sense to let it continue to pulse into the baby after birth (what many midwives and natural birth advocates do)??

"Cord blood" is babies blood. It is no different. And it's not collected from the cord, from which, at most, a few cc are collected but from the placenta.

Since you see no problem with setting asunder that which God has joined together, nothing I can say will make a difference.

Excellent article. For once there is solid proof that adult stem cells do work. This happy story should silence those who claim that only embryonic stem cells deliver the desired results.

I'm glad CBS is the source of the article....but why didn't this story make headline news when the President was struggling with his decision concerning embryonic stem cell research?

Oh, uh, sorry.....lost my head. Such a story would not have underscored the leftist mindset of pro-choice. If they were to support adult stem cell research, they would be, in a round about way, condemning the killing of embryos. That would logically lead to condemning the killing of "fetuses" by pro-choice. How could I be so naive? /sarcasm off

How are stem cells from cord blood "adult stem cells"?
