I heard some guy on local radio called "old timer" say he is going to show up as Santa at this event. This should be interesting.

That's what I was wondering about. . .Santa is truthfully less offensive than the tree (if you really think about things that should/could/might potentially offend someone for whatever reason. . .).

I have to say though, at our Homeschool holiday pageant last year (which celebrated all the winter holidays of as many religions as we could get representation from -- and some other things that weren't religious at all), Frosty the snowman showed up on the fire truck. No one was offended, and the kids were quite thrilled.

And for what it's worth, it was in Maryland, too. We moved back to Texas over the summer and in some ways I miss the particular aspect of Maryland that despite the volumes of goofy laws, and the fact that there are so many different police forces, I miss the fact that for the most part about religion, people left you alone. I can see where this whole situation came into play in MD -- although I do think it extreme.

But then, here in Texas, many of the city offices have a "big star" on the top (symbolic? I believe so) -- I haven't seen any with a manger. And you know, I don't know that it would be appropriate (flame suit on) -- I think it's different if it's a city office vs. a private business. There is that little thing of separation of church and state.

Anyway -- now that I've probably dug myself into some kind of hole, I don't think there is an easy answer. But then I also think the Gov't spends way TOO MUCH $$$$ and I object to a city or state government sponsoring holiday parties. I believe that even the Federal stuff is privately paid for (at least I know the National Menorah is Chabad Lubavitch, as for the Nat'l Christmas tree, I have no idea).
