So Greece is "Third World Islamic Fanatic"?

In Greece, they burn US flags and jeer the minute's silence for New York's terror victims. Helena Smith on the most anti-American country in Europe

"What was wrong with those attacks," says the upright Greek businessman speaking of 11 September, "was that they didn't happen at night. If they had happened then, the towers and perhaps even the Pentagon would have been empty."

The businessman, let's call him Giorgos, has one of those pleasant, open faces. He wears a European Commission flag pinned to his lapel, and is explaining, quite calmly, how the average Athenian sees the day that changed the world.

"In Greece," he murmurs in a matter-of-fact way, "we regard this as a textbook case of David versus Goliath. America is overly arrogant and it needed to be brought down to earth. The attacks were the consequence of all its sins - Kosovo, Korea, Vietnam and Cyprus, a classic case of American double standards; 11 September was a taste of its own medicine."

America is widely disliked throghout the world for its double standards of which its Middle East policies are simply the most egregious example.

If America can't make the lives of other people in the world better by promoting freedom and justice for all people, not just some, and instead supports oppressive regimes which don't have the support of the world's population, and instead chooses as its destiny to attack and punish rather than to build and uplift, we will soon find we will have eveyone in the world against us.

Then Bush can huff and puff about "terror" all he wants, just like his Israeli counterpart and it will simply make his - and our - country more enemies.

Like there are so progressive, none repressive modern third world regimes we could support?

In your ignorance it has likely escaped you that the regimes we do support are far closer to western values than any available alternative.

Why should the article look to Greece for anti-American hatred when we have plenty of useful idiots posting here on FR ready to whine?
