Do try to keep in mind though much of the original meanings have probably been distorted through generations of retellings as well as the simple act of translation from the original Hebrew and Aramaic, languages not spoken in that fashion for centuries. Also, keep in mind the Bible is not the only Holy Writ. The Koran, Torah and Bagda Shiva (sp) are considered by their respective religions to have the same weight as the Bible does to Christians.
