Actually, I agree with you. In the typical close range home defense situation, you would definitely want something with some spread - primarily to account for the fact that you'll be so scared, and shaking so badly, there's still a good chance you won't hit them, even with the spread. When I mentioned the slugs, I was kind of joking, and kind of thinking of the absolute worst case scenario, when the bad guys are coming at you in bullet proof vests or (lightly) armored vehicles, in which case the slug will give you some leverage.
