The Nephilim were on the earth in those days and also after that....
This is talking about before and after the flood of Noah. Gen 6:1-7 is a short cumulative of the narrative of the 6th, 7th and 8th Chapter of Gen. By missing verse Gen. 6:5-7 the author didn't go far enough into the overall concept of the chapter negating the overall context.
2 Samuel 21:15-22 speaks of the raphah, or the Rephaim...#7497/1051-Beyth Rapha Strong's...which appears to be a seperate distinction from the Nephilim. One apparently pre-flood, the latter post-flood.
Just my understanding of things. Take it or leave it.

A little more info. A search of "Rephaim" comes up with numerous hits. While the Nephilim are interesting much more is written about the Rephaim.
