FLASHBACK: Front Page Headlines -- May 4, 1999 -- Day FR Treason Ad Ran in WashTimes
Washington Times 5/4/99 Edition | November 26, 2001 | Angelwood

Posted on 11/26/2001 7:01:24 PM PST by Angelwood

Over the recent Thanksgiving Holidays as I was doing some cleaning and reorganizing Free Republic materials and souvenirs, I came across a copy of the Washington Times which published Free Republic's "We Dare Call It Treason" ad. It still makes a very powerful visual statement seeing it 2-1/2 years later.

For background, members of Free Republic raised funds, designed the background and argued over the text of this ad and placed it in the Washington Times on the day that we joined other groups in a rally and dinner to honor the 13 House Managers who went to the Senate to try "Impeached" President Clinton.

Impressive and striking as our ad was and still is, I was struck by the relevancy of the front page headlines to recent people and events in the news. I have copied portions of the articles below:

KLA rebels train in terrorist camps; Bin Laden offers financing, too.

"Some members of the Kosovo Liberation Army, which has financed its war effort through the sale of heroin, were trained in terrorist camps run by international fugitive Osama bin Laden -- who is wanted in the 1998 bombing of two U.S. embassies in Africa that killed 224 persons, including 12 Americans.

"The KLA members, embraced by the Clinton administration in NATO's 41-day bombing campaign to bring Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic to the bargaining table, were trained in secret camps in Afghanistan, Bosnia-Herzegovina and elsewhere, according to newly obtained intelligence reports.

"The reports also show that the KLA has enlisted Islamic terrorists -- members of the Mujahideen -- as soldiers in its ongoing conflict against Serbia, and that many already have been smuggled into Kosovo to join the fight....

"The intelligence reports document what is described as a 'link' between bin Laden, the fugitive Saudi millionaire, and the KLA -- including a common staging area in Tropoje, Albania, a center for Islamic terrorists. The reports said bin Laden's organization, known as al-Qaeda, has both trained and financially supported the KLA...."

Clinton willing to negotiate for less than a "total victory"

"President Clinton yesterday softened his demands for a Kosovo agreement, saying the composition of a peacekeeping force is 'subject to negotiation' and emphasizing he is not seeking 'total victory' in the conflict.

"Mr. Clinton also invited the United Nations to give its imprimature to a peacekeeping force that the White House once insisted be led by NATO or at least have NATO at its core. Yesterday, the president allowed for a 'security force in which NATO plays a role.'

"The new flexibility by Mr. Clinton, who has generally taken a much harder line on Kosovo, came as the White House intensified efforts to find a diplomatic solution that would allow Yugoslav President Slovodan Milosevic a face-saving out."

Other headlines were about NATO mistakenly hitting a civilian bus and killing 17 people (collateral damage in the Kosovo war); protesters at Camden Yards when the Cuban national team played the Orioles; mourners and survivors of the Columbine high-school massacre; and an article entitled, "Toy guns are no longer something to play with" involving a man arguing with a co-worker and returning shortly with a gun -- a toy gun -- he was charged as if it were a real gun.

I posted this thread because I kept thinking about 9/11, Clinton, Osama bin Laden, terrorists being trained by bin Laden and embraced by the Clinton Administration at the same time "bin Laden and his military commander, Mohammed Atef, were named in a federal indictment handed up in November in New York for the simultaneous explosions Aug. 7 at the U.S. embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania....The indictment said bin Laden, working through al-Qaeda, forged alliances with government officials in Iran, the National Islamic Front in the Sudan and an Iranian terrorist organization known as Hezbollah."

Clinton and his Administration launched a "war on terrorism" but it was a war of words -- PC rhetoric -- and maybe a couple of bombs on an aspirin factory and some expensive missiles aimed at empty tents in the desert (the famous "missed bin Laden by an hour" excuse). How can someone seriously hunt down terrorists and at the same time grant others of them pardons?

Compare and contrast Clinton "willing to negotiate for less than a 'total victory' to President Bush and his "No Negotiation" stance with the Taliban and al-Qaeda. Thank goodness President Bush is our Commander-in-Chief.

Fascinating look-bag, Angelwood. It's almost legion the number of ways the last president sold out his country.

I remember that ad, I was just a lurker back then. Look what has happened in the past 2 1/2 years. Last year at this time, we were protesting in almost every major city in the country. Just imagine what this country would be like today if gore was in the White House. FR really does make a difference. Thanks Angelwood, I needed this reminder.

Can you imagine Algore giving the order to ground FAA and shut down the airports so any hijacked planes could be identified? Not I. Algore had his priorities straight -- Al 1st, unions and abortionists 2nd, the DNC 3rd and the good of the Country was last on his list. Algore is a micromanager and would have probably followed his partner in crime's footsteps by taking a poll and then wagging the dog -- too little, too late. Thank goodness Algore finally got out of Cheney's house.

You posted the first ad Free Republic placed in the Washington Times on the day before the Senate vote on removing the impeached president. Every Senator's office receives a copy of the WT, among other papers, and we wanted to shame them into doing the right thing. Unfortunately, it didn't work -- some Senators don't have such a thing as a conscience. Or blackmail and party loyalty trump duty and honor.

The Treason ad is a red background with white and yellow printing. There is a superimposed picture of Clinton and the head of China toasting each other with an impressive nuclear cloud between them. The heading at the top of the page asks: "Were America's Nuclear Secrets Compromised For Campaign Cash?" I hope someone can post a copy, but it may be in the archives that we can't access at this time.

Thank all of you for being there and for the reports 'from the front lines.' My framed print of the ad hangs proudly in my office.
