How about sealing the "retreat" including the air holes? I hear cement works well. Or pumping something lethal into their air supply.

Pump in LOTS of acetylene through the vents...and apply a match.

Let's fill it with wax. Then light the wax. That should burn for a while, and it would make a nice candle. We could light it during Christmas season for special effect.
