Bush to Name Justice Dept. BUILDING After Kennedy - DRUDGE BLOWS IT BIG TIME
ABC News ^ | 11/16/01

CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - President Bush next week is expected to name the Justice Department headquarters after Robert F. Kennedy, a Democratic U.S. attorney general and brother of former President John Kennedy.

"He is expected to sign a document essentially dedicating the Justice Department building for Robert F. Kennedy," a White House official said on Friday. The official had no further information on the decision.

But Newsweek magazine said Bush and Attorney General John Ashcroft would hold the renaming ceremony on Tuesday, on what would have been the assassinated New York Democratic senator and presidential candidate's 76th birthday.

Kennedy served as U.S. attorney general to his brother, President John F. Kennedy, then became a U.S. senator and was campaigning for the White House himself when he was gunned down by Sirhan Sirhan on June 5, 1968, in Los Angeles after winning the California primary.

There have been unsuccessful efforts in Congress to name the building after Kennedy.

While serving as attorney general from 1961 to 1964, Kennedy gained a reputation for doggedly pursuing organized crime leaders. Ashcroft last month cited that reputation in pledging a similar effort against terrorism.

Newsweek magazine reported on its Internet site that several generations of Kennedys would attend a dedication ceremony.

I thought it sounded odd that Bush was going to name a department besides something other than what it does. It would be very impractical - and very un-American, in my view. Un-British too - our departments say what they do.

I also wonder what we got in trade for this little symbolic gesture.

Maybe they promised the Republican leadership (ROFLMAO!) that they wouldn't make them eat their own body wastes for a whole month? Maybe they just promised to not hate them or talk about their mama's?

Bobby Kennedy as I recall was one h*ll of an A.G.--and the mobsters knew it, and trembled!

You recall it wrong. Bobby mostly went after the NY mafia and left the others alone. This had more to do with backstage payoffs that justice. If he had been interested in justice,he could have investigated election fraud during the Nixon/Kennedy race. Especially stuff like buying off delegates in Chicago,West Virginia, and Texas.

"is this the same Kennedy family that was involved with the Chicago may-fia and Cuba ?"

"Yup,it's even the same Kennedy Klan that rigged/bought the US presidential elections that put John in office."

Pete, Just wanted to make sure we were taking about the same Kennedys here.

It is important whose name is put on public buildings. Only a few misguided and sycophantic Bushies would think this doesn't really matter. It represents the soul of America -- if buildings are named for corrupt people, then so is America a corrupt society. Also, the GOP can't seem to find any heroes of its own. It seems like I recall Walter Mondale rightfully complaining about that, when Reagan-Bush continued to evoke the memories of FDR and HST. You didn't hear Mondale evoking Landon and Dewey. Why won't the GOP honor its own heroes? Why do they have to "steal" from the Democrats?

What about the Reagan Buidling?

IMO the only Republican that deserves a federal building named after him his Barry Goldwater.

Well, there is also a Dirksen Building. There is Mt. McKinley. But is there a building named for Herbert Hoover? No, the Republicans let the Democrats smear that man's name to the grave. Even HST thought that the Democrat smear of Hoover was wrong. That's why he asked Hoover to head a presidential commission in the late 1940s on streamlining the national government. Why don't we have a building named for Chief Justice Taft or President Coolidge? Or Senator Robert Taft?

I saw it. I assumed it was a typo -- as it probably was. No biggie. No "blows it big time."
