Air Authorities Monitored Terrorist Threats After Downing Of Flight 587
Sierra Times ^ | November 14, 2001

In the fastest diagnosis ever of an airplane crash, newspapers across the country led with the story that Americans Airlines flight #587, with 260 souls aboard, fell from the sky (probably) due to an accident. However, Sierra Times has learned from undisclosed sources within the FAA, that early claims had authorities scrambling, leading to a possible doubt that the fatal crash was actually an accident.

At approximately 9:45 am EST on 11.12.01, air traffic controllers nationwide were given orders to "groundstop" aircraft going to the New York city area airports in wake of the crash of American Airlines flight 587. "Aircraft that were already airborne heading to the New York area (La Guardia, Newark, JFK, etc.) were advised to either return to the airport of their departure or to land at an alternate until the situation in New York was more clearly under control" the source told Sierra Times under condition of anonymity. Of concern was another September 11 event, where plane hijackings multiplied, resulting in over 5000 deaths.

Starting at approximately 10:15 AM, and ongoing throughout Monday, some individual, with no distinguishable accent, was broadcasting on air traffic control frequencies in the Orlando/Daytona Beach area "Death to America..More will come...You are next", said the voice. Apparently this was being broadcast to further heighten fears on both the federal government and pilots. But with scanners being readily available, and some airlines allowing passengers to monitor air traffic frequencies during their flight, the public heard it as well. The FAA and NORAD continue to monitor the frequencies, according to the air traffic control employee.

Whether this was a claim of responsibility is highly unlikely, as the broadcast was made after the television networks had broadcast the tragedy of the crash.

In the previous few days, several reports have been made of someone broadcasting on the same air traffic frequencies other things such as the Orlando Airport would be blown up, and numerous other threats. One of these threats, on November 8th, caused two Air Force F-16 fighters to force down a private plane in Ocala, Florida after the FAA believed the source of the transmissions was from this aircraft.

What is most interesting is that Emory-Riddle University, located in Daytona Beach, Florida is the same place that several members of the September 11th attackers were reported to have been trained to fly. Since Daytona Beach is located right within the airspace that these threats were broadcast on. It would be reasonable to assume that there are still some individuals that need to be identified.

More as this develops…

There have been so many articles posted on the crash of flight 587 that I may have missed this particular topic, but this is the first I have heard about these broadcasts. Has anybody else heard about this?

What sort of equipment is needed to broadcast on air traffic control frequencies?
And no, I hadn't read about the transmissions.

In one of NTSB briefings, a reporter asked a question about this. The question seemed slightly cryptic to me, and I couldn't understand what the reporter was asking about. The NTSB said something like "We're looking into it." and immediately took the next question. I'd forgotten about it until I read this, and I'm sure now this is what the reporter was referring to. The media has obviously been downplaying this!

Yeah, the local Orlando tv stations reported this, but, as I recall, had no more information than what this article provides. As for the plane being forced down in Ocala, there were a couple of threads here about that. Someone in Ocala observed the activity and started a thread.

P.S., It's "Embry Riddle" and I believe in the final analysis, only 1 hijacker trained there, a name something like Waleed Al Sheri (2 of the hijackers had similar names), a Saudi airline pilot. The Saudis were arguing that his identity was stolen, but I think the FBI still concluded he was one of the hijackers.

You can buy a really good hand-held radio which broadcasts and receives these frequencies for about $300...I have one I carry in my flight bag as an emergency backup should the radios in the airplane fail for some reason...a very common practice for private pilots.

Such radios are available online or through catalogues such as Sporty's to anyone with a few bucks.

Thanks, can the transmissions be traced to at least a general area?

Yes. I would suspect they are waiting for another transmission to do just that. A moving car would be tough to track down…
