From what I just heard on Fox, based on the press conference with American Airlines, the intact engine on the ground in basically one piece was the older of the two engines---the one that apparently exploded had substantially less miles.
I was just starting to get comfortable with the idea of air travel again, everyone saying "more safe than ever, now" but regardless of the reason for this crash, I'm wondering if I'll make it back to the east for the holidays. I've traversed the continent on the ground twice in the last three months---just cannot do it again.

It seems to me that most of the planes that go down are leaving NYC for other places. You might be safe coming INTO NYC but maybe not OUT OF.

You are NOT alone.
I have already canceled on a Turkey Day return to "fly-over" country, partly due to a
class I'm taking.
Now I'm having doubts about XMAS.
I've told my folks (and they are very comfortable with this): Until there's three months
with NO commercial aviation deaths on American carriers...I'm NOT flying unless
absolutely necessary. And if so, I'll take Southwest Airlines, even if I've got to
fly three legs.
(I think the record is zero deaths while Southwest has been in service...if wrong,
I hope lurkers will correct me.)
