WABC Radio: Plane was outgoing from JFK, with wing on fire; pilot attemped to land in less populated area of Jamaica Bay.

A Level One mobilization has been declared, alerting emergency workers.

JFK and LaGuardia closed.

Guliani headed to the scene.

Actually, as the news is coming in, there's now some confusion as to whether plane was incoming or outgoing to JFK.

Caller to WABC to saw crash said the plane "definately did not explode in the air."

Crash happened at 9:17.

At this point, if it is the work of terrorists, any killing of Americans would have an impact.

This is true..if it was an international flight, possibly an international airport gave easier access to a flight into NY. At this point..who knows? Obviously all speculation.

Buildings on the ground on fire. Huge smoke cload.
Same type plane as 9/11 but cause not known.
Likely not full of fuel since flight inbound. All NYC metro airports closed down.

Come to think of it, Jamaica Bay would be a good place to pull off an attack with a stinger or other portable anti-aircraft missile. Lots of reeds, lots of places to hide, shallow non-turbulent water.

We'll see. In the wake of increased security measures post-9/11, the 9/11 M.O. may have given way to more opportunistic tactics, e.g., sabotage, ground-to-air attack etc. A big plane going down in a crowded city suburb still packs a wallop and makes a statement even if not fully fueled.

If it is not terrorist-related, the timing and venue are nevertheless astonishing and especially unfortunate. This will be another savage blow to American Airlines and the airline industry.
