I'd be willing to have the vaccination.

And how do you force every American to get vaccinated? I sure as hell have no interest in this, the anthrax vaccine, or any other vaccination.
To: Magician
This is Horse Hockey. Last night, President Bush cautioned against a rush to vacinate people against small pox. He said that many people may die. He ain't pushing universal vacination.

The vaccine is fatal for one in a million cases. That's about 280-300 folks, if you believe the government.

All Americans could be forced to have smallpox jabs under plans being considered by President Bush, despite fears that such a program would kill hundreds. And just how, might I ask are they planning on enforcing that?
Guess they could just shoot those who refuse?

We are so far from compulsory universal innoculations that it's not even worth worrying about. There's no evidence that terrorists are in possession of smallpox. Even if they were, modern quarantine procedures and the nature of the disease itself would assure that smallpox didn't spread much beyond the first few cases. Even if innoculations are initiated, I doubt that they could effectively be made mandatory. Christian Scientists, for one, would object and be given exemptions, so just declare yourself one of those if you have a problem with it.

That headline is a bit of a stretch.

This is a good example of how to slant a story to create the most fear. I've never heard of this source before, but apparently, all Bush is doing is considering the possibility. This story makes it sound like Bush doesn't know that the vaccine has a risk, like every other vaccine. Once again the press thinks Bush is an idiot, who doesn't have access to expert opinions on the subject. And the vaccine used to be compulsory. Forced vaccination is what helped to eradicate the disease in the first place and save countless lives.
So, if you distill this story down to the basics, all we know is Bush is considering doing something that has been done before. I don't think it will happen, personally--compulsory vaccination, that is, unless there is really an outbreak.

If there's something wrong with the vaccine (say a contaminant due to, I don't know, terrorism) it could kill 275 million Americans.
I don't believe the federal government is competent enough to quality-control something of this potential lethality. I may get a smallpox vaccination, but not from a government 'stockpile.'

No President can FORCE every American to get a smallpox vaccination. What is he going to do, arrest the millions who may not want to take the vaccine? Hell, the Census Bureau can't even FIND everyone. How are they gonna give everyone a shot?
To: Magician; Frohickey
It might be smarter for the President to strongly recommend that everyone be injected, and make the vaccine free of charge to anyone who shows up.. not just citizens.. smallpox won't ask for your immigration status before it gets you..

Have any info about how this vaccine was developed? I don't seem to remember it being on that list of vaccines made from the lung cells of aborted fetuses.

The site "rense.com" looks very wacky ... flying saucers, Big Foot, metaphysical stuff. I want to hear this from a legitimate source first.
To: Magician
the president can't order anyone to be vacinated...
To: Magician
oh, and that would be "innoculated", not injected. A significant difference...
