BUSH JUSTICE DEPARTMENT BLOCKS RENO DEPOSITION

Latest Obstruction Prevents Scheduled Testimony In Defamation Case Against Accused Spy Wen Ho Lee

Last Minute Gamesmanship No Better than Clinton Justice Department

(Washington, DC) Judicial Watch, the public interest law firm that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, today criticized the Ashcroft Justice Department for obstructing a long scheduled deposition of former Attorney General Reno in whistleblower Notra Trulock defamation case against accused Chinese spy and admitted felon Wen Ho Lee. Trulock, the former chief of the Energy Department intelligence operations, is suing Lee and others for falsely accusing Trulock of racial bias while conducting an inquiry into the loss of America nuclear secrets from Energy Department labs. Former Attorney General Reno, who was subpoenaed last month, was expected to testify that Wen Ho Lee charges of racial bias had no basis in fact and that there was a legitimate basis to investigate Lee. The deposition of Ms. Reno was scheduled to take place tomorrow in Miami. Judicial Watch is representing Mr. Trulock in this matter.

Late yesterday afternoon, the Ashcroft Justice Department, through a fax from Assistant Attorney General Robert D. McCallum, Jr., unilaterally decided that Reno (and other witnesses such as former FBI Director Louis Freeh) would not appear as scheduled. Judicial Watch was told by a Justice Department lawyer that this decision was only made yesterday. (The Ashcroft Justice Department had known that Reno would be testifying in this case since June of this year.)

The Justice Department lawyers know they have no legal basis to prevent Ms. Reno from testifying at the last minute. Yet they think they are above the law and are contemptuous of the Court processes. The Ashcroft Justice Department has continually obstructed this case. Indeed, a federal court has already sanctioned them for similar conduct in this case. "Truth be told, in matters that Judicial Watch has been litigating, the ethics and practices of the Ashcroft Justice Department are no better than those of Reno Justice Department", stated Judicial Watch Chairman Larry Klayman.

"No one is above the law. And Judicial Watch will seek appropriate sanctions and plans to ask for an independent investigation by the Office of Professional Responsibility into the way the Wen Ho Lee case has been handled. These repeated obstructionist tactics by this Justice Department are most likely to cover up their ongoing negligence concerning the loss of virtually all of our nation nuclear secrets to China and other nations adverse to the United States", added Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.

I truly wish the Bush Administration would do something about Clinton and his Gang. They should be punished for all they have done to America. If they don't they are no better.

It would be helpful if JW told us what basis the Justice Department did invoke so we can decide whether it is really "no legal basis."

What??? And expose himself as the Ambulance Chaser he REALLY is??? WHADDAYANUTZ????

Provide ANY proof that ANY of his cases dealing with Chinagate, Filegate, Emailgate, Ron Brown were EVER "laughed out of court".

Are those cases still in court?

Why do you go out of your way to try and discredit EVERYTHING that Judicial Watch did during the Clinton years? Are you a democRAT?

You are such a predictable parrot.

Larry Klayman is not a cheat, obviously the money donated would go to investigating and hopefully going to court, but people need to be paid decently, especially around the DC area, and JW has to keep their office running.

I just hate this NEW Republican "move on" mentality. It is MORE of a threat to our freedom and our nation's security than terrorists will EVER be.

You're hyperventilating again, Chooser.

You just can't get any traction on Ron Brown, so, like a broken record, you drone on and on about murder and treason, only you capitalize everything.

Bush was elected to do what he is doing now. If you would rather divert the attention of the Justice Department to chasing Clinton rather than terrorism, try to sell that to the American public.

If they support you, so will I.

Ah, but you should know by know that complacency is much easier than actually doing something about the problem, like Larry is. It really is much easier to sit around and throw personal attacks, than verbally supporting someone that is fighting for a cause that no one believes in anymore

If Bush wants to lecture the United States about evil forces in the world, this was one truly evil crime that was committed against our country and the safety of our national security.

Hey, we only care about foreign enemies here. Them domestic ones don't count. You never know when your own administration could be nailed for something down the line if you're going to take the tack that previous administrations can be held responsible for their actions. We wouldn't want that, now would we?

If JW was going after Democrats these people would be throwing roses at Larry.

Don't be so sure.

Many of the most vocal critics of Klayman are continually suggesting that he NEVER accomplished ANYTHING. They are, curiously enough, also the same ones who keep spouting the "move on" mantra. That sure makes me suspicious that they don't want the democRATS investigated. Why? Perhaps because some of them are not really conservatives. After all, it is easy to sound conservative on this forum ... just don't say anything that might actually encourage investigation and prosecution of the many Clinton/DNC crimes. Or they might be New Republicans ... who feel that perhaps Bush and the GOP have their own dirty laundry that might become public if they went after the democRATS. Afterall, democRATS have the Filegate information.

"no legal basis."

If the DOJ has really been sanctioned by the court, you can bet your house there is a legal basis.

Okay, Okay...I know I shouldn't have used the word "dude." And I do know the difference between criminal cases, civil rights cases, etc. I just get frustrated when people give Larry such a hard time, because I believe that he is doing the right thing.
