BUSH JUSTICE DEPARTMENT BLOCKS RENO DEPOSITION

Latest Obstruction Prevents Scheduled Testimony In Defamation Case Against Accused Spy Wen Ho Lee

Last Minute Gamesmanship No Better than Clinton Justice Department

(Washington, DC) Judicial Watch, the public interest law firm that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, today criticized the Ashcroft Justice Department for obstructing a long scheduled deposition of former Attorney General Reno in whistleblower Notra Trulock defamation case against accused Chinese spy and admitted felon Wen Ho Lee. Trulock, the former chief of the Energy Department intelligence operations, is suing Lee and others for falsely accusing Trulock of racial bias while conducting an inquiry into the loss of America nuclear secrets from Energy Department labs. Former Attorney General Reno, who was subpoenaed last month, was expected to testify that Wen Ho Lee charges of racial bias had no basis in fact and that there was a legitimate basis to investigate Lee. The deposition of Ms. Reno was scheduled to take place tomorrow in Miami. Judicial Watch is representing Mr. Trulock in this matter.

Late yesterday afternoon, the Ashcroft Justice Department, through a fax from Assistant Attorney General Robert D. McCallum, Jr., unilaterally decided that Reno (and other witnesses such as former FBI Director Louis Freeh) would not appear as scheduled. Judicial Watch was told by a Justice Department lawyer that this decision was only made yesterday. (The Ashcroft Justice Department had known that Reno would be testifying in this case since June of this year.)

The Justice Department lawyers know they have no legal basis to prevent Ms. Reno from testifying at the last minute. Yet they think they are above the law and are contemptuous of the Court processes. The Ashcroft Justice Department has continually obstructed this case. Indeed, a federal court has already sanctioned them for similar conduct in this case. "Truth be told, in matters that Judicial Watch has been litigating, the ethics and practices of the Ashcroft Justice Department are no better than those of Reno Justice Department", stated Judicial Watch Chairman Larry Klayman.

"No one is above the law. And Judicial Watch will seek appropriate sanctions and plans to ask for an independent investigation by the Office of Professional Responsibility into the way the Wen Ho Lee case has been handled. These repeated obstructionist tactics by this Justice Department are most likely to cover up their ongoing negligence concerning the loss of virtually all of our nation nuclear secrets to China and other nations adverse to the United States", added Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.

What does Notra Trulock's defamation case against accused Chinese spy and admitted felon Wen Ho Lee have to do with finding anything out about the security of this country. This is a personal lawsuit for defamation, and is itself a big diversion from anything of importance.

After watching Bush now since 20 January, I have to conclude Bush is afraid of the Clintons. He is scared out of his wits about something or several things.

Hey, guess what? We don't let private attorneys subpoena government officials (even former ones) to question them about national security matters. Not even former government officials that we can't stand.

Does this come as a suprise to Larry? Hasn't he wondered why the Soviets didn't simply subpoena the former heads of the CIA?

One win for the right side, will hopefully encourage more investigation into the Chinagate Scandal. After all, it is a good chance that Wen Lee had given away our nuclear secrets to China. These cases are both related, but in an indirect sort of way. The point is that justice must be served for both cases and that Trulock was wrongly accused of racism to divert attention away from the truth.

You are talking and trying to make comparisons between two different and unrelated cases here. It is highly uncommon for any country to subpeona government officials from a different country.

Bush is sick of the Clintons. As are the rest of us.

He's trying to forget about them, move beyond them, but guys like Klayman know he can get a few bucks by going after Clinton cronies.

Klayman's in this for the money, you know.

Larry knows about gamesmanship. Mr. "I Only Spent Two Million Dollars of the Thirty Million I Raised on Legal Cases" Klayman knows all about suckers and gaming.

"This is a personal lawsuit for defamation, and is itself a big diversion from anything of importance."

If you were being personally defamed for being something that you are not, in Trulock's case a racist, wouldn't you want to clear your name also? I know that I would...you can't just label people as something that they are not and not expect to have any consequences for the action. Even the internet maverick Matt Drudge found that one out.

Ah, one of the most famous Ad hominem attacks for trying to discredit someone without actually having any hard evidence.

Why won't Klayman produce his donor list? After all, he wanted to see Clinton's library donors.

Quit the personal attacks and look at the real picture here--nuclear espionage and corrupt politicians that are getting away with their disgusting personal behavior and irresponsibility with their elected public office.

If Larry truly wanted to just be on TV, he wouldn't running around, taking on difficult cases that no one, even conservative Republicans, believes in anymore.

He's not taking on anything; this is practically the only case he has left that hasn't been laughed out of court.

We don't let private attorneys subpoena government officials (even former ones) to question them about national security matters.

Tell that to Ron Brown. Oooops! You can't because Clinton and the DNC had him (and 35 others) KILLED to stop Brown from testifying under oath about matters related to our nations security (such as selling restricted technology for ILLEGAL campaign contributions). I'm tired of the EXCUSES by the Bush administration. Why hasn't the death of Ron Brown been investigated and prosecuted? They had 8 months WITHOUT A WAR to do something. They did NOTHING (not even a little exhumation and autopsy that would have taken all of a WEEK!). Why hasn't the Riady Non-Refund been investigated and prosecuted? That's a national security issue! They had 8 months WITHOUT A WAR to do something. They did NOTHING. Why hasn't Filegate been investigated and prosecuted. That's a national security issue (BLACKMAILING Congressmen). They had 8 months WITHOUT A WAR to do something. They did NOTHING. And I can repeat that question OVER AND OVER AND OVER, each time with another scandal. And each time the answer is NOTHING! What IS (by ANY definition) the Bush administration and GOP afraid of? Maybe THAT'S the REAL National Security Threat?

It would be helpful if JW told us what basis the Justice Department did invoke so we can decide whether it is really "no legal basis."

Why does he need to? I don't see Larry Klayman abusing his public office, sexually assaulting women, selling our nuclear secrets abroad, etc.

Interesting photo. Bush is much taller than what’s his name, but the hems of their twin shirts are at the same length.

He raised thirty million dollars and spent LESS than 2 million on legal expenses.

Now, if you think that's a personal attack, you and Larry are no better than the people he claims to be fighting.

WHERE IS THE OTHER TWENTY-EIGHT MILLION DOLLARS???????????
