Sheriff's Deputy Shot; Suspect Killed

A sheriff's deputy in eastern Arizona is hospitalized in critical condition after being shot while trying to arrest a suspect. The suspect was in turn shot and killed.

The confrontation occurred in the town of Eager around midnight.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Officer Steve Volden says the Apache County sheriff's deputy was shot twice in the head. He was airlifted to a Phoenix hospital.

His name wasn't immediately released.

Volden says the deputy was among several officers who were attempting to arrest 58-year-old William Milton Cooper of Eagar.

Volden says Cooper had been armed with a handgun. He says details of the shooting will be released later at a news conference. DPS was called in to investigating the shooting.

Good shooting?

I guess you only like cops when they're under 110 stories of rubble, huh.

I don't know who sucks more. Left-wing anarchists or right-wing anarchists.

BTW--Who in the government has unequivocally indicted right-wing militia types for the Anthrax letters.
If it is (which of course it couldn't be according to you)a radical-right nutjob, do we give him a pass?

Alleged Militia Member Dead, Deputy Shot

Eagar, Ariz.

Get the Latest

An Apache County sheriff's deputy may be paralyzed after being shot in the head by a so-called militia member, who was shot and killed by officers.

The incident happened in the town of Eagar, which is located in the eastern part of the state, close to the New Mexico border.

Sheriff's deputies were trying to serve an arrest warrant on William Cooper, who has reportedly been known to be hostile toward law enforcement. In order to approach the home, deputies disguised themselves as a bunch of rowdy teenagers in the back of a pick-up truck in hopes of luring Cooper out of his home and it apparently worked.

However, when Cooper realized what was happening, he reportedly pulled a gun and shot the 40-year-old deputy in the head.

During the gunfight, Cooper was reportedly shot and killed.

Officials say Cooper belongs to a militia movement and has published several articles in anti-establishment articles. He also reportedly has a Web site and on it, acknowledges there is an arrest warrant for him, but writes "Any attempt by federal government or anyone else to execute the unlawful arrest warrants will be met with armed resistances. Any person who attempts to kidnap our children will be shot upon discovery."

This raid on Cooper's compound seems to fit the bill.

What raid??? I read the article repeatedly and there was no mention of a "raid".

Semper Curious

Nice try A-hole, but two head shots under fire qualifies as great shooting.

As for what lies under the rubble and who is to blame just ask your friendly loving government why they are protecting mid-eastern terrorist cells right here in the good ole US of A.

Don't you have some grass to go graze in?

What raid???

Sorry... I was alerted to the story by a friend in AZ over the phone. He saw it on television. Rather than suffer the scorn of a million Freepers for reporting without a link, I searched for the first article I could find for posting. My friend described it as a raid over the phone.

Was Cooper a friend of yours? Are you feeling kind of antsy that you might be next?

I wonder what the arrest warrant was for?

Cold dead hands sounds about right.

How does a 40 year old man disguise himself as a rowdy teenager? My wife thanks you all in advance for help you can give me.
