As far as "America's bonehead Mideast policies" are concerned: Here we have a beacon of liberty and popular sovereignty in a benighted sea of barbarism and tyranny. Should America stand idly by while Israel is slaughtered? And then what? Don't you think America would be next?
You know, it has been said (and the saying is relevant) that although Hitler's true objective was Great Britain, he had to invade and conquer Belgium first, because it stood in his way. Just substitute America for "Great Britain," and Israel for "Belgium," and I think you can get a pretty clear picture of the current strategic situation.
