Agreed. The only difference now between 'law abiding citizen' and 'suspected terrorist' is an 'anonymous informant'.

That will never happen, there will always be a need for data encryption, and it will get more sophisticated as time goes by. Companies/governement, as well as consumers will want SSN numbers, credit card numbers, criminal records etc. to be transmitted/stored in an encrypted form. Its for your safety as well as theirs.

Those of us who have nothing to be ashamed of don't mind sharing our lives with the FBI.

I can see where you got your nickname.

Screw the FBI. They will be no more successful filtering the web than they were filtering anything else. Boys and their toys. What a waste of liberty.

Let me be more specific. I'm talking about encryption that the govt doesn't have the backdoor keys to.

President Bush's intentions and motives are good. However I fear that if anyone less responsible than he comes to office, and it will happen eventually, that he has placed some of the people here into the hangman's noose. Figuratively, of course.

Quite frankly this scares the hell of me. There is a part of me that says that signing this into law is equivalent to signing a death warrant against America as a free country, thereby making us slaves to the federal government. All that's lacking is a "brand." Oh sure, they SAY it is only for 4 years and that it will be limited in scope, but wasn't the same thing said of the income tax at its inception? Can anybody cite a situation in which the federal government ever returned a power to the people once they had gotten it away? Why would this be any different? What I see is foreigners commiting crimes against us and Americans paying the price. What is wrong with this picture?

Or you could check out Hushmail for secure email, hosting & storage.

The only unique risk I see with using Hushmail is the chance that their business might fail...

They can try all they want ... technology created by privacy-seeking individuals will continue to ignore them.

These measures are just like gun-control -- they affect the mass of law-abiding people and miss the criminals.

And you have evidence to the contrary? If so, present it here. This is not Clinton we are dealing with.

PS - I hope you are ready to have your head handed to you on a platter for that remark. They don't take kindly to anti-Bush smears around here, poorly attempted or otherwise.

The attitude of Germans in the early 30's, summed up quite neatly. Thanks.

My question: with responsible people in charge, this could turn out fine. What happens if the First Bitch comes to office and exploits this power?

One more step to being a bannana republic and not a nation of free men and women.
Ivan the problem is that in government responsible people are never in charge.
You might as well hand in your guns because once they finish off freedom of speech they will be next.

Fine. Start criticising Bush loudly on this board and see what reaction you get.

"This story isn't news to anyone who has paid attention at all over the last three years."

True, but now its the law.
