A NATION CHALLENGED: IMMIGRATION; Suspects in Hijackings Exploited Loopholes in Immigration Policy

Abstract
Hijackers who flew airliners into World Trade Center and Pentagon exploited immigration system that critics contend is riddled with loopholes and that is geared to ease the way for commerce, whether in form of tourism, business or study; experts on terrorism say security precautions often take back seat to pressure from industry, concerns of neighboring governments and even bureaucratic rivalries in US government; say sheer volume of daily border crossings--300 by land from Mexico alone--make exclusion of all foreign terrorists impossible; photo (M)
Five Israelis Held In New York |
October 25, 2001 Five young Israelis are "on the verge of collapse," according to family members, as their incarceration in New York on charges relating to the Bin Laden attacks continues. They were arrested on Sept. 11, only hours after the World Trade Center attack, on charges of "plotting to blow up" a New York bridge. |
I feel. Therefore I Am!
On what evidence, Mark?
Now, c'mon. Can you name any information you've received which would make you believe there are thousands of Mohammed Attas running around out there? This is just mass hysteria, driven by those who benefit; the government, and the media. I can certainly see how the craziness arose that led to all those Japanese-Americans being interned in 1941.
Hey, the FBI used to assume everyone in the militias was a potential terrorist. Think of how many resources they used up chasing the Randy Weavers and the Eric Rudolphs. Those guys paint with a pretty broad brush, Fitz.
I say, forget this wacky and counter-productive plan to deport all aliens. Even if it were possible it wouldn't make America any safer. If you want to try a radical initiative, why not set up a Christian country somewhere in the Middle East? Somewhere the Ten Commandments and the Bill of Rights are respected, and people can get ahead by the sweat of their brow. Show the Arabs what can be done under US guidance and values, the same way Japan showed the Asians.
No, I haven't said that. What I did say is that injustice can breed more trouble than it solves. Despite all Al-Qaeda's calls for jihad nothing has happened- except for one nutcase trying to light his shoe with a match. So what's all this stuff about 'thousands of terrorists' and the threat from within? The fact is most of the world's Muslims obviously won't rise up and don't follow Bin Laden's orders.
Barnacle, 'logic' is not a word we associate with those arguing the 'pro' case on this thread.
Please check your definitions.
Look what they're trying to do to us for supporting a Jewish country in the Middle East. They think they have the right to commit terrorist acts because we support Jews, I'm sure supporting Christians would have them justify ten times the terrorism.
And then they hate us for exporting our culture. It's really up to the Arabs to change and one thing they have to change is the culture that keeps them primitive. Polygamy isn't compatible with middle class systems, one man cannot support 4 wives and 50 kids by working 1 or 2 jobs and the system of one man taking many women leaving the rest of the men with nothing better than to die for the religion is one reason they're backward. Islam makes them perfectly content to keep their corrupt leaders and mullahs, the only way we can keep control of them is not to let them bring their culture here and keep a good handle on their leaders.
I don't believe for one minute that they intended to bring down the WTC to crush our economy, disable the Pentagon, kill the Congress and President and then just pack up and go home. They did a fair amount of damage in just a few minutes with 3 hijacked planes. The 4th was stopped in flight, there were other intended hijackings but the airlines shut down so fast they were stopped. I read somewhere they intended not just to hijack on the East coast but were planing hijackings throughout the country but forgot about the time zones so the West coast hijackings were 3 hours behind. Even out here on Sept 11, every government building was immediately shut down which was curious at the time but makes me think they knew some of the plans there were for those.
If bin Laden's Sept 11 attack had been a bit more successful, we'd have seen many other of his followers move into action. They had big big plans.
Yes, I saw it in the news. Now whether they are lying or not, is another issue, but yes, I have seen it. This does not seem like a difficult concept to grasp, I can't imagine why you are having such a hard time about it. This stuff may be happening in Australia sometime, one never knows. I hope you people are ready for it.
I guess you have a problem with FBI estimates. Do you have a better handle on how many terrorists are in the U.S. than the FBI has? According to the FBI there are "at least" 2,000 terrorists here and since we are still letting in aliens from nations that harbor terrorism I don't see that number going down. Interesting how you dismiss the what happened last week with the "Shoe Bomber" as something of a joke when if this "nut case" had a better detonator he could have brought the plane down killing almost 200 people. But the greater point is that this is just more proof that our enemy has not given up on trying to commit heinous acts of terrorism against us. You don't seem to be all that concerned about this. Well at least you confirmed my point that deporting middle east visitors in the U.S., at least as long as we are fighting terrorism, would indeed reduce the risk of terrorism here. Yes, there is no doubt about it. If we get attacked again just remember this point.
Why are you sure of that?
The few who hate, hate Jews more than they do Christians. How about trying some fresh ideas, Fitz? What Israel's doing obviously doesn't work too well.
Hang on. In a third-world rural economy you need those big families, to work in the fields. So there's a good reason for that.
I think the onus is on the US to break the envy nexus and show the Arabs there's a better way. A bit of lateral thinking, along the line of JFK's Peace Corps, perhaps.
Because nothing's happened, Mark. Three months ago nineteen terrorists carried out an horrific attack, yes. They're dead. There's been no further attacks. And yet there's a small but significant segment of Americans running around in a state of fear-driven hysteria. They're perfectly safe, but they've worked themselves up to such a point that they're prepared to canvas bizarre options like this one in their quest for 'security.' What older Americans, who say lived through WWII must think makes me cringe. And as for Londoners, who lived through the Blitz.....
I'm not sure I believe that. They've been killing Hindus for quite some time, read some of the Hindu web sites about Islam -- it's quite informative. They aren't killing Hindus for supporting Israel, India and Pakistan are lining troops up at their border and it has nothing to do with Israel. Muslims believe that at some point in time, the whole world must and will submit to their god allah and that seems to be what their problem is with all others. They hate the West as much as they hate Israel. Since they've killed more Hindus than Americans, I think they hate the East at least as much as the West.
Seemed appropriate.
