A NATION CHALLENGED: IMMIGRATION; Suspects in Hijackings Exploited Loopholes in Immigration Policy

Abstract
Hijackers who flew airliners into World Trade Center and Pentagon exploited immigration system that critics contend is riddled with loopholes and that is geared to ease the way for commerce, whether in form of tourism, business or study; experts on terrorism say security precautions often take back seat to pressure from industry, concerns of neighboring governments and even bureaucratic rivalries in US government; say sheer volume of daily border crossings--300 by land from Mexico alone--make exclusion of all foreign terrorists impossible; photo (M)

Five Israelis Held In New York

October 25, 2001

Five young Israelis are "on the verge of collapse," according to family members, as their incarceration in New York on charges relating to the Bin Laden attacks continues. They were arrested on Sept. 11, only hours after the World Trade Center attack, on charges of "plotting to blow up" a New York bridge.

Katie Shmuel of the Galilee town of Yokne'am, southeast of Haifa, says that her son Yaron is in "a very critical psychological situation," given that they are not allowed to have visitors and the difficult conditions in which they are being held. "Even the Israeli Consul-General in New York was allowed to visit only after asking several times and receiving a special permit," Katie told Arutz-7's Yosef Zalmanson today. "He was allowed to talk to them only in English, and only from behind a glass partition. The Consul told me that the boys are in a bad state and that they are being held under difficult conditions."

When asked why the five youths, aged 22-26, are being held, Katie replied with despair: "It's ludicrous. They were on the George Washington Bridge [between upper Manhattan and New Jersey] at the time of the bombing, and the FBI had warnings of a terrorist plot, of guys in a white van, to blow up the bridge. So when the FBI saw this van, with my son and his four friends - one of them had a large sum of money, there were two razor knives in the van, and one of the boys is named Omer, which the FBI guys thought was Omar - they put one and one together and got three, and immediately arrested them... For the first few days, the boys were held in an FBI dungeon, tied up, with no clothes and no food." She said that original reports that they had been arrested while boisterously watching the disaster from a rooftop "are totally fabricated. For one thing, they weren't even on a roof, they were in a van..."

When asked how she explains her son's continued incarceration and that of his friends, she said, "I truly have no explanation for this incredible story - except this: The Americans are using them as pawns to pressure the Israeli government. Am I being clear enough?" She said that President Moshe Katzav and others had attempted to intervene, but there have been no results so far. The youths are being held in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.

A spokesperson for the Israeli Consulate in New York told Arutz-7 that in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, "the Americans now have different procedures for dealing with the detention of anyone arrested in connection with the attacks. Every single request of ours must go through the FBI and the State Department's legal team." She said, "We are doing as much as we possibly can on their behalf," including, she said, getting local Jewish leaders involved in the cause of the imprisoned young Israelis.

But since when is collective guilt the way to decide immigration, or for that matter, any other policies? Some of your argument reminds me so much of the liberals', on guns- someone commits a crime with a gun, so all gunowners are responsible.

Collective guilt? Where are you coming from? The FACTS ARE that fundamentalist MUSLIMS commit over 90% of world terrorism. And every one of the sicko terrorists that committed the 9/11 assault on America, everyone, was from a Middle East Muslim nation. Much as Willie Sutton quipped when asked why he robbed banks "because that is where all the money is" the same goes for Middle Easterners…because these are the ones that account for terrorism in this world. Moreover, the citizens of this country have every right to expect that our government fulfill its PRIMARY responsibility to “protect” its citizens from enemies "foreign and domestic"...At least that is how it is spelled out in our constitution.

Terrorists don't need to visit the US to carry out an attack on American assets or citizens.

It certainly makes it a lot harder for them if they find themselves back in their own countries. There have been many attempted terrorist acts, including an Arab killing Robert Kennedy here in the US by an Arab living here in the US taking orders from Arafat. This isn't about the Iraqi army landing on our shores, they are being sent here as agents of destruction to work within the US to bring it down.

Thanks Jennikins. We here on the west coast and southwestern United States know full well the severity of the situation.

I'm not too afraid of non-Islamic immigrants. Even if there are problems with them, they are a completely separate issue, they aren't hijacking our planes or trying to explode them or killing innocent Americans in the WTC.

So what? They're all dead, and there's been no further terrorist attacks. But the question I have for you is, how would this proposal for mass deportations protect the US? Because as we've repeatedly seen these people don't need to be within your borders in order to succeed in their missions. I'd say the sheer unfairness of it would be more likely to inspire a terrorist attack, and inflame a new set of enemies.

I can't agree with that, Fitz. There are American embassies and businesses and tourists just about everywhere. And really, there's been very little protest, and no attacks on any of them, since 9/11. The biggest problem our side's facing right now is the media, who are keeping the public in a state of constant fear and frenzy in order to sell papers and boost ratings.

...WE (USA) DON'T DARE just sit around and do nothing twittling our thumbs....

1. the people who carried out the attacks are dead;

2. the organisation who planned the attacks is smashed;

3. the country where the attacks were planned is rubble;

so that's hardly sitting around and twiddling your thumbs. I think really what this thread is about is good ol' venting; California-style 'express yourself' and 'let it all out' therapy. Which I guess can't hurt. But let's be clear; should the original proposal (to deport all aliens) ever be enacted it would be like pouring gasoline on the smouldering embers of terrorism.

All the ones from Sept 11th are dead. Most of us are convinced there are thousands more like them, right here in America

I'd say the sheer unfairness of it would be more likely to inspire a terrorist attack, and inflame a new set of enemies.

I am not convinced one way or another on the deportation thing, but I am convinced of one thing. Nothing we say, think or do, will have any bearing on whether or not we have another terrorist attack. There will be more attacks, even if we did absolutely nothing. I hope they don't fly one into the Opera House, or the Sydney Harbor Bridge at rush hour either. That would be almost as bad as the WTC and Pentagon.

I think you are 100% correct on that statement. We must at least have a morratorium across the board on all immigration!

Well, let's use common sense on that. My woman is not a US Citizen, and is not in the US yet. I don't want to keep her out, but we do want to keep terrorists out. Now, how we do that efficiently, I am not sure, but we can't sit on our hands, and do nothing.

the people who carried out the attacks are dead;

Those 19 did not pay their own room and board, they didn't pay their own tuition to flight schools and colleges. The Muslim terrorists living in the US are a well-financed group and much of their money is coming from US mosques. The average Muslim may or may not know they contribute to terrorism through their "charities". Back in 1998, it was estimated there were 1500 to 2000 known terrorists living in the US. "Jihad in America" is a good video to watch to learn more what the FBI knew all along.

I agree about common sense immigration. People come from countries that have nothing to do with terrorism against the US or anywhere else and they shouldn't be punished over what the Muslim Arabs are doing to us.

What? According to the Pentagon, Al Queda alone still has some 70,000-100,000 terrorists around the world. The U.S. has plenty of work ahead in taking out the other nests of terrorism around the globe. Seems like you want America to make a declaration of victory over terrorism because we mopped up the nests in Afghanistan and go back to business as usual. The same sort of complacency that led to 9/11 to begin with.

And are you trying to say that if we deport all the Muslims here in the U.S. on visas that terrorism in the U.S. would not significantly decline? That would be like saying if someone quit smoking while still young and healthy that it would have no impact on the chances of getting lung disease than if they kept on smoking. Well perhaps if our immigration policies don't change soon one might as well be a 3 pack-a-day smoker because it won't make any difference when one of these terrorist networks find a way to sneak WMDs in this country.

As for your comment that deporting Muslims would "inspire" a terrorist attack...that could happen as it would be in keeping with the characteristics that defines Muslims. The good news is that after they are gone we won't have to worry much about terrorism on these shores anymore.

This is an emotional topic. It’s unfair of you to muddle up the argument with logic.
