A NATION CHALLENGED: IMMIGRATION; Suspects in Hijackings Exploited Loopholes in Immigration Policy
By DIANA JEAN SCHEMO and ROBERT PEAR

Abstract
Hijackers who flew airliners into World Trade Center and Pentagon exploited immigration system that critics contend is riddled with loopholes and that is geared to ease the way for commerce, whether in form of tourism, business or study; experts on terrorism say security precautions often take back seat to pressure from industry, concerns of neighboring governments and even bureaucratic rivalries in US government; say sheer volume of daily border crossings--300 by land from Mexico alone--make exclusion of all foreign terrorists impossible; photo (M)

Five Israelis Held In New York
|
October 25, 2001 Five young Israelis are "on the verge of collapse," according to family members, as their incarceration in New York on charges relating to the Bin Laden attacks continues. They were arrested on Sept. 11, only hours after the World Trade Center attack, on charges of "plotting to blow up" a New York bridge.
Katie Shmuel of the Galilee town of Yokne'am, southeast of Haifa, says that her son Yaron is in "a very critical psychological situation," given that they are not allowed to have visitors and the difficult conditions in which they are being held. "Even the Israeli Consul-General in New York was allowed to visit only after asking several times and receiving a special permit," Katie told Arutz-7's Yosef Zalmanson today. "He was allowed to talk to them only in English, and only from behind a glass partition. The Consul told me that the boys are in a bad state and that they are being held under difficult conditions."
When asked why the five youths, aged 22-26, are being held, Katie replied with despair: "It's ludicrous. They were on the George Washington Bridge [between upper Manhattan and New Jersey] at the time of the bombing, and the FBI had warnings of a terrorist plot, of guys in a white van, to blow up the bridge. So when the FBI saw this van, with my son and his four friends - one of them had a large sum of money, there were two razor knives in the van, and one of the boys is named Omer, which the FBI guys thought was Omar - they put one and one together and got three, and immediately arrested them... For the first few days, the boys were held in an FBI dungeon, tied up, with no clothes and no food." She said that original reports that they had been arrested while boisterously watching the disaster from a rooftop "are totally fabricated. For one thing, they weren't even on a roof, they were in a van..."
When asked how she explains her son's continued incarceration and that of his friends, she said, "I truly have no explanation for this incredible story - except this: The Americans are using them as pawns to pressure the Israeli government. Am I being clear enough?" She said that President Moshe Katzav and others had attempted to intervene, but there have been no results so far. The youths are being held in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
A spokesperson for the Israeli Consulate in New York told Arutz-7 that in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, "the Americans now have different procedures for dealing with the detention of anyone arrested in connection with the attacks. Every single request of ours must go through the FBI and the State Department's legal team." She said, "We are doing as much as we possibly can on their behalf," including, she said, getting local Jewish leaders involved in the cause of the imprisoned young Israelis.

FresnoDA is a resident conspiracy theorist here at Free Republic. Just about anything he posts reeks of reactionary hate or "gummint" conspiracies.

What about those us who are not US citizens, but on the way to naturalization, and of conservative viewpoint? My wife and I cheered on Dubya and volunteered for his campaign. Can we stay in the US?
If you don't think we should stay in the US, please tell me how the hell you, FresnoDA, timestax, and other associated rednecks plan on going about doing anything about it.

I think your comments about the racial aspect of why immigrants are generally 'disliked' proves one point about you and others which I had suspected all along. And it is a reason why I'm no longer a Republican, although I did support George W. Bush last year.
However, you guys are trying to throw out the baby with the bathwater. Targetting the vast majority of good, patriotic, and productive immigrants in this country doesn't help fight against terrorism. It's just something to give a few immigrant-hating rednecks some happiness.
But since the ultraconservative immigrant haters are not in charge, how do you expect to impose this silly, infantile policy of deporting all legal immigrants who love this country more than you ever will?
George W. Bush is a good and tolerant man who would never enact what you and FresnoDA want to do to good America-loving people.

What I meant was, that's exactly how liberals talk to conservatives when we argue with them. "right wing reactionary" is definitely libspeak.

Let us not fail to mention the expensive processing fee that it will cost them to be expelled.

I couldn't think of any other way to describe FresnoDA's infantile plan to deport even those immigrants who love this country and what it stands for more than he does. I think FresnoDA is just expressing his own bigotry toward peaceful America-loving immigrants. He has a major enemy identification problem.
But again, I'm not worried. We don't have a bigot in the White House. We have a good, tolerant man in President Bush, and Bush would never support ridding this country of peaceful, America-loving immigrants. My family is multinational and we're staying put and continue being productive, America-loving citizens regardless of what FresnoDA thinks.
So basically FresnoDA and the reactionaries that want ALL legal peaceful immigrants out of the country have NO way of accomplishing their infantile, bigoted plan to break up families who love America.

I'm with you if Nouge and his followers want to bow at the feet of the almighty dollar.....so be it. The real problem is that a lot of companies that lobby congress have hired cheap programers, technicians, and gen. workers from suspect nations. Worshiping money over the safety and well being of us.
