Five Israelis Held In New York

| October 25, 2001 Five young Israelis are "on the verge of collapse," according to family members, as their incarceration in New York on charges relating to the Bin Laden attacks continues. They were arrested on Sept. 11, only hours after the World Trade Center attack, on charges of "plotting to blow up" a New York bridge.
Katie Shmuel of the Galilee town of Yokne'am, southeast of Haifa, says that her son Yaron is in "a very critical psychological situation," given that they are not allowed to have visitors and the difficult conditions in which they are being held. "Even the Israeli Consul-General in New York was allowed to visit only after asking several times and receiving a special permit," Katie told Arutz-7's Yosef Zalmanson today. "He was allowed to talk to them only in English, and only from behind a glass partition. The Consul told me that the boys are in a bad state and that they are being held under difficult conditions."
When asked why the five youths, aged 22-26, are being held, Katie replied with despair: "It's ludicrous. They were on the George Washington Bridge [between upper Manhattan and New Jersey] at the time of the bombing, and the FBI had warnings of a terrorist plot, of guys in a white van, to blow up the bridge. So when the FBI saw this van, with my son and his four friends - one of them had a large sum of money, there were two razor knives in the van, and one of the boys is named Omer, which the FBI guys thought was Omar - they put one and one together and got three, and immediately arrested them... For the first few days, the boys were held in an FBI dungeon, tied up, with no clothes and no food." She said that original reports that they had been arrested while boisterously watching the disaster from a rooftop "are totally fabricated. For one thing, they weren't even on a roof, they were in a van..."
When asked how she explains her son's continued incarceration and that of his friends, she said, "I truly have no explanation for this incredible story - except this: The Americans are using them as pawns to pressure the Israeli government. Am I being clear enough?" She said that President Moshe Katzav and others had attempted to intervene, but there have been no results so far. The youths are being held in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
A spokesperson for the Israeli Consulate in New York told Arutz-7 that in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, "the Americans now have different procedures for dealing with the detention of anyone arrested in connection with the attacks. Every single request of ours must go through the FBI and the State Department's legal team." She said, "We are doing as much as we possibly can on their behalf," including, she said, getting local Jewish leaders involved in the cause of the imprisoned young Israelis.

Well, you raise a good point... the cost of deporting all resident aliens (legal and illegal) is not worthwhile because the money could be better spend elsewhere and would prevent terrorism much more efficiently.
The "deport them all" proposal is similar to saying, "would you spend $2 trillion on my pet program to save 1 life?" Obviously not, because you can save the same number of lives for a much lower cost with money spent elsewhere. Likewise, we can prevent terrorist attacks more easily by enacting other solutions that are less costly and more efficient than deporting all resident aliens. For those that say, "but this is war", that's no excuse to do stupid things. Unless the main goal is to do things like, "unify the country" by giving Americans a sense of, "we're all in this together to deport non-citizens", it's not the most efficient means of staving off terrorism.

now a citizen if memory serves." Not necessarily. The bar is lowered for citizenship, however, for immigrants married to U.S. citizens. The waiting period of residency for an immigrant married to a citizen is 3 years (going through that now).
I have no problem with the US government dealing with and deporting illegal aliens. If someone can't handle the legal method of coming to the US, then round them up and ship them home.
What I have taken issue with is the fanatical, reactionary call in this thread to deport ALL aliens -- legal and illegal. This would unnecessarily break up families here in the States only to appease some xenophobic bigots on the far right of the political spectrum. Although, there is no worry. President Bush is a tolerant and diversity-respecting man, and would ignore reactionary calls for families to be broken up here in the States. I'm glad I voted for him.
It just shows me that some so-called "conservatives" talk up a good game on "family values", but then let their xenophobic backwater fears of people of different accents and skin colours take priorities.

It would hurt our economy, and who would flip our burgers and mow your lawn? ... or design your company's e-commerce system, or handle your company's accounting to ensure compliance with GAAP, or manage your production line? It's the current ultra-right-wing trend to blame immigrants, legal and illegal, for everything and to imply that they are not valuable. But I know many every day who serve vital corporate functions and have trained me, a native US citizen, to do better in my job. My wife is a legal alien and is her company's chief accountant.
How soon we forget that we just had 6000 people murdered, all of whom met a violent death. I say deport every single Mid Easterner that is not a citizen. Every single one. And to be fair, deport every single illegal alien. It should have been done years ago. Enough is enough.
That's not what the reactionary who started this thread is saying. Mr FresnoDA is telling us that we should deport ALL immigrants, legal and illegal, to satisfy his xenophobic, backwater, and childish wants.
We should target illegal immigration, and double check student visas. But don't punish innocent and legal citizens who love this country merely to satisfy the childish wants of some ultra-right-wing reactionary who hates people of different accents and skin colors.
