In much of the non-taliban territory in the north, the women tend NOT to wear burqas OR veils.

A National Geo documentaries taken some time ago indicate that while food is scarce and people are relatively poor, the people do keep themselves pretty clean, even in refugee areas, which are quite clearly not designed for winter use as the tents are uninsulated 'truck tarp' woven plastic. In the part of the tape taken behind Mossood's lines, people are clearly glad they aren't in Taliban country, particularly the women, though in the mountains they still have to contend with banditry.

One of the poorest groups in the north wass a village of people descended from mongolian stock, who were doing well until some smugglers got their family headman hooked on opium after he tried it to relieve pain from an injury. The village chief was bombed out of his gourd after that and was literally selling the village herds out from under them, a few at a time. It was doubtful they would get through the winter if they didn't do something about his 'spending habits.' (Very reminiscent of what Bubba Clinton was doing to the US, LOL) The women (none veiled) were making wonderful embroidery to trade; the kids were spotless, but when winter hits, it was obviously going to be a different story.
