Contrast that with Winston Churchill's reaction to very real threat of German invasion in 1940.
I love Fumento..the ultimate myth-buster, but interestingly, one "myth" is that Britain faced a real threat of German invasion..they didn't. Hitler wasn't REALLY serious about the preparations, and careful analysis indicates there's no way they could have done it.......had nothing but unstable, small flat-bottom barges to get across the channel, even if the RAF had been wiped out, enough of the Royal Navy would have survived to trash the assault..and all you need is 1 or 2 battleships in the middle of the barges and it's the end of the assault. Interestingly, the PRC doesn't have remotely close to the capability to invade mainland Taiwan, either, for many of the same reasons.

Just last week the news on the radio said that 18 were murdered in 19 days in Baltimore. The law of unintended consequences strikes again! The mayor and law enforcement officials have been more interested in locking down the city from an anthrax attack it seems.
The mayor defends the 18 dead in 19 days by saying that statistically the city has less violent crime than previous years. I am sure this makes typical Baltimore residents feel great to know that statistically they live in a safer city. Anthrax is the least of the problems, yet it has all the attention right now.

I'm a Fumento fan since his debunking of the AIDS panic, but he's missing the boat here. A lot of anthrax has been mailed. It's deadly stuff that is clearly distributed much more effectively than American scientists and doctors believed. It's killed one journalist and two postal workers so far, and there are some indications that antibiotics don't work on it as effectively as they do on cases of anthrax in agricultural workers. Yes, there's been a great deal of panic and hysteria, but to paraphrase a Churchillism, there's a great deal to be panicked and hysterical about. This is not some kind of mass delusion.

Whatever the messages our media and our Congress send, we the people must act with the resolve that Mr. Churchill saw in his people and is characteristic of our people. Like Britains in 1940, we possess a steely resolve. It's time to show it. It's time to show that we must not and will not give our enemies precisely what they seek.
Good conclusion.

I used to respect Fumento, but he is out to lunch on this. And what hysteria is he talking about, exactly? Most people are carrying on with their lives as if we didn't have a bunch of terrorists on the loose in this country, threatening to unleash weapons of mass destruction on our civilian population. And that is the real problem, not the non-existent "hysteria." The terrorists who just rearranged the New York skyline have been kind enough to spell out for us that they have weaponized anthrax, and intend to use it, and we've decided it's better to pull up the covers and pretend that the problem will somehow magically go away. If Fumento wants to see hysteria, he should wait a few weeks. If these terrorists are not rounded up, he'll get a look at some real hysteria.
