American vice-president Dick Cheney warned the war on terrorism might not be over in our lifetime.
Vice-president, added Americans will have to adapt their way of life to the threat of more attacks.
"It is different than the Gulf War was, in the sense that it may never end. At least, not in our lifetime," Mr Cheney told the Washington Post.
"I think it's fair to say you can't predict a straight line to victory. You know, there'll be good days and bad days along the way."
"The way I think of it is, it's a new normalcy," he said. "We're going to have to take steps, and are taking steps, that'll become a permanent part of the way we live.
"In terms of security, in terms of the way we deal with travel and airlines, all of those measures that we end up having to adopt in order to sort of harden the target, make it tougher for the terrorists to get at us. And I think those will become permanent features in our kind of way of life."
But he warned the country could not cope with a series of warnings if there were no attacks following the alerts.
"You have to avoid falling into the trap of letting it be a cover-your-ass exercise," Mr Cheney said.
"If you scare the hell out of people too often, and nothing happens, that can also create problems. Then when you do finally get a valid threat and warn people and they don't pay attention, that's equally damaging."
And he added: "If you create panic, the terrorist wins without ever doing anything. So these are tough calls."

I'm reminded of Yogi Berra's comment: "Things are more like they are now than they have ever been before". Or...
"The more things change...the more they stay the same."

The only time this war will be over is when all people of the earth are of the same religion. The leader of this theocracy will have the name Jesus Christ. For complete information regarding this new ruler of the earth please refer to the Holy Bible, Genesis through Revelations.

Wow, this is a real news flash. We are never going to eradicate terrorism in anyone's lifetime. No, of course not, not any more than we will ever eliminate war. It will, however, eventually eliminate this terrorist campaign.

Re: history of war, I agree.
Although I would add that the war will not be over in the terrorists' lifetimes, short though they may be.

Who will be holding the keys to security? Who will be recognized and respected as such? I think the government is fooling itself if it does not want to rely on militias and try to keep the same distancing attitude with gun owners. It's time people started to respect the value of that and that we bypass gun control that way. This fight against terrorism has to be done in balanced ways. If the Feds want more power and security, they will have to rely on funding not only friendly sovereign foreign nations, but also friendly home based militias whose individual sovereignty is respected. There is no other way than that, the Swiss model is not a bad one, but we can do even better.

Mine was not a shot at Cheney. It was a shot at those who are deluded enough to think that the "War Against Terrorism" is one that will ever be finished.

Yes, I know, and I'm getting rather frustrated by all of those blasphemously cherrypicked scriptures .

Basing one's idseas about the future, on fiction books, is illogical, and nonsensical . Rather , you should look at historical trends.

That's a preposterous supposition. Forget Nam, and look at the elections during WW 2 and the Civil War.

the country could not cope with a series of warnings if there were no attacks following the alerts There probably won't be any warnings. Well, you could do a daily Tarot spread, but if you publish and are wrong, you will become just another record in the 'Boy Who Cried Wolf' spreadsheet.

Where did I say the war would end? This mess is being positioned to outlast the 100 years war. This will be like setting out to kill all ants with a magnifying glass...there, 1 down and 983 bazillion more to go...
