A mention in the religion's sacred books is a good indication. That's why it is so surprising the Muslims have such an interest in a place that was never named. The Crusades were fought because the Muslims wanted to wipe out all Jewish and Christian relics in Jerusalem and build Muslims shrines on them

I suppose by your definition we can nuke Salt Lake City and level Fatima and Lourdes without pissing of the Mormons or angering the Catholics since none of those places are mentioned in the holy books of either religion. True?

BS. Pope Urban promulgated the crusade in large part stop europe's gangster elite -- the knights and earls -- tearing up europe in their constant feuds, wars, and mercenary endeavours.

It was a good chance to get the swordsmen out of Europe. Read Karen Armstrong's "Holy War" and you'll get a good, quick overview of the conditions that led up to the first crusade.
