This is an old article. I hope it hasn't already been posted. Couldn't find it.
I wonder how much control Putin yields over his military?

Sorry Mr. Putin, but we cannot allow you, to not allow us, to defend our nation against terrorist enclaves, where ever they might be.

"Russia has emerged as an ally of both Baghdad and Teheran."
Always was the taskmaster, since World War II.

Simple solution. If these guys are your buddies, then get them to cough up the terrorists hiding in their territory.

But they said President Vladimir Putin would not allow the regime of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein or Iran to become a U.S. target in such a war. Just try to stop us Putin. You think your the only country with suitcase nukes? HAHAHA!

My see-saw position on Russia's conduct in Chechnya has been pushed toward the anti-Russian side once again. Russia cannot be allowed to play the same doubletalk game with us that the Pallies play with the Israelis.

Been assuming this was the reason.
Seems to me there ought to be some leadership ways around it. . . .unless we've already been so sold down the river by Bimbo Crusher et al that we have no clout to weigh in with. . . . or else Gorby and all the other globalist pals including daddy B . . . have vetoed it as well as Putin. . . which I guess is the same thing as being sold down the river by Bimbo Crusher et al

Russia can go to hell on this one! IRAQ needs to be flattened. There is no doubt of their ties and funding and training and support for terror around the globe. Russia should spend more time worrying about feeding its people and less time worrying about dictators who need to be "eliminated".

"...Col. Sergei Goncharov, a leading Russian military analyst, said. "We are on good terms with Iran. We have tremendous economic investments in and expectations of Iraq. We can't afford to sever all these ties in one stroke. I foresee a major debate along these lines."" It would seem to me that this boneheaded Colonel does not speak for those in power in Russia.
And what makes him 'a leading Russian military analyst'? Did they take a vote?
Or perhaps it's a Zogby poll.

From Jack Kemp's commentary in the Washington Times, Thursday, Oct 18 .... worth reading.
.....For the first time since the Gulf War, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, John Negroponte, made direct contact with his Iraqi counterpart at the U.N., Ambassador Mohammed al-Douri, to deliver the message from the United States warning Iraq not to use the current situation to take any action either against its own minorities or its neighbors.
The contact did not come through circuitous diplomatic efforts but rather by the ambassador's getting into a car on a Sunday, driving over to the Iraqi U.N. Mission, knocking on the door and delivering a message to the Iraqi ambasssador in person.
... There is a healthy debate inside the Bush administration over what to do about Iraq. But on one point there is little disagreement: A rehabilitated and revitalized Iraq, if possible, would provide a secular anchor of modernity in the Islamic world, a base from which to fight off the rising tide of religious fanaticism. This might just be possible without having to conquer Iraq by sending our troops and NATO military forces into Baghdad.
If Saddam is wise, he will invite inspectors back into Iraq and send some positive signals to Mr. Bush immediately. We are all watching very carefully. The choice is his.
