Madison, Wisconsin Mayor Responds
Mayor of Madison, Wisconsin ^ | October 15, 2001 | Mayor Sue Bauman

Posted on 10/15/2001 7:33:54 AM PDT by gaelwolf

After learning of the Madison school board's decision to play the Star Spangled Banner (minus it's "martial" words), rather than to recite the Pledge of Allegiance (with its "possibly offensive" "G" reference) last week, I sent a note of concern to the city's mayor. This morning, the following message was in my e-mail:

Please be advised that the Mayor has no control over the actions of the School Board. I do not agree with the action that was taken last week. The School Board is meeting this afternoon to re-consider its stance. There has been an outpouring of public sentiment against the action the board took.

Sue Bauman Mayor

While I know that the mayor has no control over the school board...or even any input into their deliberations...it's nice to know that she not only has a personal position on the issue, but that she's opposed to their approach.

As to the actuality of not having any input into the school board's decision-making process, I'd be willing to be that she's been among the many making their personal position known to members of the board...

The school board is meeting on the question this afternoon. It's going to be interesting to learn what their updated position will be...will any Madison FReepers be keeping tabs for us?

Nice four line thanks for your concern reply, a public announcement stating her position and urging citizens to remember this issue at the next elections would have been better. I bet the local Papers, Radio, and TV stations would be happy to attend press conference. So much about taking a public stand rather than washing one's hands and pointing a finger."It's not my fault".

Who said anything about being elected? There is so much voter fraud in Dane county (Madison) and Milwaukee. Sheesh. I'm really glad I don't live there.

As a side note, my sister-in-law lives in Madison. She says the majority of principals and teachers are ignoring the school board on this, plus the parents are outraged! It will be interesting to see the outcome of the hearing today.

"...the Mayor has no control over the actions of the School Board..."

Oh....REALLY????

That that school board say 'against' that beloved Mayor...and then we'll see how much "Control" is to be had....

LMAO! That's it! It's a conspiracy by the people of Quebec to screw America. So? They moved to Madison to get that revenge. LOL! I can live with that! I'd rather believe that than believe we have such proud Communists displayed where our children can see them and dictating policies for them. UGH!

FWIW, I received this from the governor a couple days ago. Oddballs is putting it nicely.

October 10, 2001

Dear Friend:

Thank you for your recent letter regarding the decision by the Madison Metropolitan School District School Board. I appreciate the time you took to contact my office.

I supported and signed into law the legislation requiring schools to recite the Pledge of Allegiance or sing the national anthem. I am disheartened by the decision and trust the Madison School Board will reconsider and revisit the resolution at their October 15, 2001 meeting.

Most Wisconsinites are looking for ways to enhance our armed forces and support our country; some people are looking for ways to diminish our belief in God and country. It is disheartening, but in a free country you have patriots and you also have the freedom for a few oddballs to place politics above patriotism.

Please join U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige and myself in a nationwide effort to recognize our troops and nation. Secretary Paige has asked all schools across the nation to join in the Pledge of Allegiance at 1 p.m. this Friday, October 12.

I love Wisconsin, and I know that in each of us there is a spirit that will not be crushed by the cowardly acts of terrorists. It is this spirit that makes America, and Wisconsin, great. I know this spirit is strong, and I am looking forward to hear Wisconsin's resounding voices, in both our schools and in our places of work, as we lift our voices to recite the Pledge of Allegiance with our President and nation.

Thank you again for sharing your thoughts. God bless America!

Sincerely,

Scott McCallum
Governor

And just to clarify the 3/2 decision, the 2 who voted no felt the decision did not go FAR enough!

These leftists always say they don't want to offend to justify their anti-American actions -- actually they DO want to offend people like us! If they really cared about offending the fewest people, they wouldn't do something as controversial and inflammatory as banning the Pledge.
