My grandfather told me that there were originally one NL and one AL team in each of X number of cities, each named after the city. I suppose with the anathema of regular-season interleague play upon us, this hardly matters any more.

Let me apologize for unleashing Bud Selig on major league baseball. I did hear recently, though, that Selig wants to kill the DH. That would be a start. Interleague play might fade away over time, if it ceases to be a draw. I like the new unbalanced schedule.

To me, the most amazing bit of baseball trivia is that the Cincinnati Reds played their first game (under the name 'Red Stockings') on June 1, 1869.

And even more amazing is the fact that one of the best players to ever wear the red stockings will never be allowed into the Hall of Fame.
