The Neverending Story
An ongoing debate on Scripture, Tradition, History and Interpretation.

Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams

One RC who thinks that all of the NC's who post here (if not all NC's in the world) are catholic-haters agrees with the other RC who thinks we are all catholic-haters about us being catholic-haters. Imagine that, what a surprise. BTW I love catholics, but your church is in trouble. But I suppose that makes me an anti-catholic for pointing it out. Oh well, some people just can't stand to have the light shown their way, but that's your problem, not ours.

LOL. Well, now that I know that, I guess I'll start playing a little differently! :-)

The Church has been in trouble for a long time, Not as long as the Jews, but long enough, but God keeps her afloat just as He keeps the Jews afloat.

That was a great post and Ratzinger is a great intellect as well as a holy man. I have read almost everything he has written the last 15 years and they are all cogent and express "truth" as simply and clearly as humanly possible. I wish with all my heart that he would be the next Pope but he is light years ahead of,or centuries behind our new post modern, post Christian world and I believe the Cardinals would not be inclined to cast their lot with person who would lead the Church the way it should be led.Mores the pity. Thanks for the post.

His age works for him if the Cardinals want to stay the same course for awhile but want to be free to choose still another pope within the next 5-10 years. As I said above, his nationality works against him. Europe is not ready to be led by a German.

We are each responsible for our own sins.

Right up to the point where it's an institutional problem, then the institution is liable as well. Let's just put a face on this that everyone can plainly understand. If it were'nt for the laws forged into RCC canon and into the legal systems of Europe as a result, the majority of these priests would be rotting in Jail rather than "letting the church handle it." And that's a fact.

There have been misbehaving Catholics around ever since the first century.

Nope, there was nothing evem remotely resembling your brand until much later, but I know you have to believe that crap you sell.

The Church has been in trouble for a long time, Not as long as the Jews, but long enough, but God keeps her afloat just as He keeps the Jews afloat.

Read the first few chapters of Revelation, God deals with local churches individually, and if they don't hold up to Christ's scrutiny they will have their lamps extinguished, regardless of denomination affiliation, you have no special priviledges with Christ. You can try and prop up something that is dead and play "Weekend at Bernie's" with it, but dead is dead. But then Jesus has been known to resucitate the dead, anything's possible.

Wonderful, thank you. George Herbert?

The hymn was written by George Wallace Briggs. One of neat things about haning out here is that I never realized how much really good theology is inlcuded in the hymns I've been singing my whole life. We'll be discussing a particular aspect of something and a hymn comes to mind and I suddenly see it in a whole new light.

Good morning all...

If you're interested, there is a free bible reading program available through the church I attend services with.

It's basically a commentary about the bible. There is some doctrinal stuff interspersed that you can take or leave, but I'm finding it interesting for some of the historical background that it gives. It started with Genesis in Feb and will continue through each book from hereon out.

You can download monthly readings as an Adobe Acrobat pdf file or do it online.

Enjoy!

Don't forget about the scancal in the Church at Corinth that Paul addressed. Satan has been very active in the Church since the very beginning. I think the resurrection sent him reeling but he recovered and has been attacking Christ's mystical body ever since.

Letter to the Smyrnaeans, A.D. 110: "...wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church."

Ya right. Now the "C" in catholic was capitolized in 110ad. The propaganda is officially out of control.

you have no special priviledges with Christ. So far the warranty has been made good. Two times in the last 200 years, the papacy was thought to be at its last gasp: when Napoleon took a pope prisoner, and when 70 years later a later pope declared himself to be a prisoner of the Vatican. In each case, the Church of Rome was rerighted. And now we know that Hitler had "plans" for it once he was master of Europe. Adversity is good for the soul?
