I believe that bridge was built to replace another bridge that was damaged in shipping accident. Major shipping traffic under bridge is reason it is so high. The old bridge has been saved and is a great fishing pier.

The FL Skyway bridge is a huge span that reaches high enough so that ships can pass below without the need for a draw bridge. It is surrounded mostly by fishing access on the causeway leading up to the actual bridge, but the mile or so just before the bridge is roadway only over water. There's no way to gain access to under structure of the bridge other than by boat/ship. In truth, probably the more likely way to take the bridge down would be by ramming it with a barge. You may recall - this current bridge was built after an older one was accidentally taken out in a storm when a barge hit it. Terrible, lots of people were killed when their cars just went over the edge.

I'm driving over it later this morning. Ugh...

If you're referring to the Skyway bridge in St Petersburg, there is nothing of military nor industrial significance near that bridge. The closest thing is a memorial to a Coast Guard vessel that sank in 1981 or 1979 (I think) and lists the names of the CoastGuardsmen who perished. Hope this helps.
