Request for comments: new feature
Posted on 10/13/2001 3:17:06 AM PDT by John Robinson
I've been tinkering with a new way to do self-search. It will display the comments as if they were in a thread, but only displays those comments addressed to you or posted by you.
Have a look at it here:
Last 100 posts involving you -- in reverse chronological order, like latest posts
New posts to you (since last time you checked) -- in forward chronological order, like a normal thread
I think this should be listed in forward chrono order, but that might make browsing your self-search awkward.

That will happen in the new version of the posting program. Oh, the new version of the posting program... wow! Is it going to be a smash!
To: John Robinson
John, that is an outstanding idea (and implementation). I vote yes--and thanks!

Cool! I prefer the reverse chrono

My rationalization for taking so many breaks from grading papers to do FR is that it's so much fun and useful somehow. But I know it's just a rationalization.
ANYWAY--I downloaded and tried to follow instructions to the letter for the stylesheets/background. Failed for some reason.
How about some standard clickables--2-3 or a menu click for a small range of style sheeds to be used?
And if you want me to dream--how about some control or alt code things for standard html stuff?
But whatever you bother to do has always been an improvement to me. I doubt you walk on water but I wouldn't drop my drawers to hear that you had begun to. THANKS LOTS.

Style sheets are in the experimental stage right now. Later, it will be very simple to select a style sheet and even customize the colors, etc.

have you thought about adding a dedicated "ping" link, so massive pings don't all show up as replies?
also, any improvements/changes to the "lists" arena?

Yeah, I'd like to have a "ping" list which doesn't add a reply at all. The structure is there, it won't be terribly difficult to implement.
Lists will be much improved. At this time, about the only thing that has changed regarding lists is the count of posts indexed. It now goes back to late March, so most of those lists will be populated again. I have some really cool ideas for the lists, I promise.
To: John Robinson
I like this new format. May I offer one more suggestion: can we have a "reply INCLUDE" function, so that the post to which we are replying is reproduced (maybe in italics) at the top, before we type our reply? Maybe make the "reply include" an option either at the user level or at the reply level, so people can choose whether they want it or not. Thanks.

Out of curiosity, will there / is there a member search? I have, many times KNEW there is a username out there but i happened to spell it wrong and would just give up.

Profile pages are the best way to search for people right now.
To: John Robinson
Very cool! Any reason you are using my posts as the example?
To: John Robinson
I have a question:
Will we ever be able to have backgrounds on our homepages again? Music?
To: Fighting Irish
That's realtime. It's your posts because it's your self-search.
To: Bella_Bru
Yeah. All programs are changing. This is a total rewrite. Home pages will be changing. They will include background and music when they do change. One thing at a time. :-)
To: John Robinson
Even cooler!
But MAN do I feel stupid now..............
To: John Robinson
I kind of understand now. From the main page I get a dedicated browser, but from my "self search" page I am directed straight to the thread in question. Fine with me.
