Making changes to the Self-Search function, and in particular, how the database is organized in relation to Self-Search.
Self-Searches should now be lightning quick and should span many months. The current index holds about 6 months of data (all I have available.)

You can add me to the list, figuratively speaking. I have the FR self-search set as my browser's home page and when I started up my browser this morning and only saw links to threads with posts to or from me, I was thrilled! I had resigned myself to having to sort through literally hundreds of search results to find the ones to or from me. You have no idea how many FR screen names have the substring "els" or how many threads have been addressed to "anyone
else" or "everyone
else".
Thank you, John!

This is bizarre: I was flagged to #209 on a self-search, but my name is NOT on the list of names. There was no major bump list to which I belong (as far as I could tell before a first cup of coffee), nor was there "all."
To: Carry_Okie
click hereThe to line only prints the first 97 characters so any others after that don't show but the bump still hits the name when you do a self search.

Got your ping!
To: xm177e2; John Robinson
When people type "All" into the subject line, that's how it should appear to people being flagged (in the self-search page). That would make it easier for people to avoid being spammed.
I agree, Ive already been pinged several times by the all thing, and would prefer not to have been. If someone wants me to take the time to read their post they should at least have to take the time to type my name. Otherwise I guarantee that freepers, being the attention starved types we are, will abuse this to no end.

No, just to people that have posted on the thread. I am considering making it a user preference option. "NO! Do not include me in All" Going to wait to see how it is abused.
Please, do that or kill it entirely.

John....I noticed this a.m. that a lot of threads don't have *navigate this discussion* after the article....I really liked that...is it going to continue?

The All feature is being abused as we speak. Someone (who will remain nameless) is pinging me back to an Anthrax thread and I really coulnd't care less about it. Kill it now, John! It was a nice idea but it just isn't going to work.
I wonder what all the people who posted on this thread will think when they come back and their self-search registers two dozens hits to this thread...
If people really need to ping everyone, they can collect the names from the thread.

Thanks. I think that this one is going to die the death of the Law of Unintended Consequences. LOL! That's the great thing about an experiment. Some end up teaching you a lot even when they bomb.

There's another way to take care of it. Don't post! :-) Of course, that may be too difficult of a solution....

okay!

Waaaahhh...., you're just a "weenie poster".... :-)
I just posted a "solution" to the "all feature".... just don't post on the thread you don't want to be "pinged" on. But, then again, some people can't shut up....
To: John Robinson
If you enter "ALL" in the "to:" field, will it ping everyone on that particular thread you're on or all registered users?
i.e. Comment to all

Agree with your #291 and #277, xm177e2. I made a similar comment on the thread: "Requests for comments: new feature."
