Imperialism implies the conquest of nations, not simple power projection or the forging of strategic alliances. The United States finished off National Socialism in Europe, militarism in Japan, Communism in Russia, and dictatorship in Latin America, all without taking over a single country. No empire required.

That is a matter of semantics. I am not agruing for conquest, but precisely for an activist, rather aggressive, rooted in sel-interest foreign policy that is not shy of showing force, but does not treat entire populations as homogeneous enemy.
