When I was a kid we used to smear butter (the real stuff!--not that fake oil and water hydrogenated stuff they palm off on us now) on a slice of bread and then coat it with sugar. Or we'd take a slice of bread and sprinkle it with sugar and pour milk over it for a real treat. Maybe that's why I'm not much of a bread eater now...over kill as a child!

We used to just sprinkle sugar on our bread. If we were feeling particularly energetic we'd make cinnamon toast- just well-bettered bread with cinnamon-sugar on it, toasted on a cookie sheet.
And French toast in the morning... egg and milk-soaked bread with cinnamon sugar, fried in butter in an iron skillet. We'd drizzle it with maple syrup.
