Stanly to close offices for Confederate Memorial Day

ALBEMARLE, N.C. (AP) -- Stanly County commissioners, who had earlier voted against a joint holiday for Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert E. Lee, have voted to close county offices on Confederate Memorial Day.

Last month, the commissioners voted to recognize May 10 as Confederate Memorial Day, but not close the county offices. But at the urging of Sons of Confederate Veterans members, commissioner Gerald Efird suggested making it a full holiday, said commissioner Michael Coble.

The measure passed 3-2 Thursday night.

"I'm not happy with it," said Coble, who voted against the measure. "We were already recognizing Confederate Memorial Day and I thought that was the end of it."

The commissioners voted in July to close county offices on Martin Luther King Day and honor Confederate general Robert E. Lee on the same day.

After protests from the local chapter of the NAACP and community leaders, the commissioners voted in August to follow the state holiday schedule. The state gives its employees the King holiday and recognizes Confederate Memorial Day on May 10, but does not close its offices.

shuckmaster,

I first heard about this story through my local SCV camp (Wilson, NC; Capt. Jesse S. Barnes Camp #771) newsletter,
which gave a link to the story on your website.
Just thought you'd like to know.

A holiday for Sr. Fox could happen!
So, too, could a day when most US citizens cannot read the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution - because it's not in Spanish.

Although I voted for Bush and support him on most things, I am nervous about where he is going with Mexico.
My wife emigrated to this country and went through the entire laborious process of naturalization over many years, finally becoming a citizen in 1997.
She's furious over any amnesty proposals.

A quote about Bush that I read recently said that "he's so pro-Mexico, if you hit him with a stick, prizes would fall out."
Sadly funny.

You should read the article on the NAACP in a recent issue of National Review.
Very insightful - it may be on their website.

Stanly, you did the right thing! Our Confederate soldiers sacrificed their lives, limbs, families, properties and who knows what else, on behalf of the sovereignty of the states. They were heroes and they deserve honor and rememberance.

If MA has "Patriot's Day," it would seem that most of its citizenry does not support the holiday. MA is no longer the place one would think about when the word "patriot" is now used. The MA of John Kerry, William Weld, and EMK cannot be compared to the MA of John and Samuel Adams. Something along the way went dreadfully wrong.

That's OK. About all it's known for is the fact that the Boston Marathon is run on that day.

Normally, we don't honor people who practice scorched earth policies. I'd say the tooth fairy has a better chance than Sherman -- :)

I think the County is considering declaring June 15th "Dumb@ss Day."

Do you have to be a licensed idiot to live in this county? Or is it just a natural magnet for them?

Those are my ancestors you're insulting. You may think you're funny, but actually you're just mean.

Some of us want to honor our dead who fought valiently in a horrible war.

First off, I don't live in Stanly County and only have a vague idea of its location (NC has 100 counties).

Tell you what, why don't you go down there and start calling people licensed idiots.
You may soon find yourself so full of steel shot that YOU will be naturally magnetic.

No, we used to celebrate that day on Feb. 12th. We don't anymore. Sad really. Let's bring back Dumb@ss Day. We could celebrate it on Feb 12th in honor of the biggest one of all and each year name a new one. My nomination for the first day would be the man who symbolizes the best the traits of Lincoln. You know, big government, overwielding power of the STATE, someone like...Ted Kennedy!!

I believe you are thinking of JEFFERSON DAVIS.
