President Bush is planning to claim executive privilege in a showdown with a GOP-led House panel in an effort to block lawmaker's access to documents about DOJ prosecutors and FBI decision making pertaining to a 13 year old FBI case with Boston mobsters and Clinton era corruption.
President Bush is expected to make an executive privilege claim to keep Dan Burton's House Government Reform Committee from seeing memos involving three Clinton-era criminal cases and the Boston mob case.
The committee served Attorney General John Ashcroft Thursday with a subpoena that demanded access to the documents and enlarged its demands to include more cases.
Committee Chairman,Republican Rep. Dan Burton of Indiana, is charging that Bush's position is a direct challenge to Congress' oversight authority in the Constitution.
"If this unprecedented policy is permitted to stand, Congress will not be able to exercise meaningful oversight of the executive branch," Burton reportedly said.
Attorney General Ashcroft has said it is the Bush administration's intent to set a new precedent and to reverse the time honored practice of sharing DOJ prosecutors' deliberative documents with congressional committees.
Burton's committee has tried since after Bush's election to obtain DOJ memos about decisions in cases involving Democratic fund raising, a former Clinton White House official and a former federal drug enforcement agent.
The House Reform Committee's subpoena served Thursday on AG Ashcroft requested those documents and was extended to also request 13 new types of documents pertaining the FBI's handling of mob informants in the Boston area over three decades.
This story underscores the behavior of Ashcroft and FBI director Mueller and the Bush Administration to perpetuate FBI and DOJ coverup of the OKC bombing case. The DOJ is still blocking surveillance tapes and withholding FBI 302's on John Does pertaining to the FBI and DOJ coverup.
AG Ashcroft so far has refused to take action on behalf of OKC witnesses who have identified John Does, were brow beaten by FBI agents, and who personally appealed (by a hand delivered letter) for Ashcroft's help to protect them and the public from John Does and FBI agents. Their request was made for them in person to the AG over 11 weeks ago.
Wow. I am incredibly surprised.

This was my reply #13 on that thread. What do you bet Bush and Ashcroft do not want Buton's committee to see the FBI and DOJ files on this story either-I smell coverup of a coverup!!!
What do you bet that Clinton DOJ holdover and coverup artist Robert Mueller, now FBI Director, and CLinton DOJ IG hold over Glenn Fine knew about this and deliberately did nothing about it??? What do you bet that they and the man who kept them on and recommended them highly, Ashcroft, will still do nothing about this?
We have gross criminal, organized style corruption in the DOJ and FBI associated with both the Republican and Democratic parties, administrations and appointed officials. We are in deep trouble in the country. The people are at grave risk
Goodness...just imagine if some Congressional Committee actually supoenaed all the records and info from all departments of the government on Waco, Ruby Ridge, OKC, the cases involved here, and countless, countless others.....Elian......
Now that is probably one time it could be said by politicians "the public couldn't handle it"!!
Before 2004 a whole lot of people are going to insist on one term, including a lot of people on this forum. Bush is a cocky, obnoxious kid. Ramming impoverished Mexicans down our throat, hoping to stoke up the public lenders for "helping" Mexico build infrastructure (so the multicorps and banksters have what they need to properly pillage the Mexicans)and the pols in DC get their end of the action with taxpayers' money donated back as "contributions", private fireworks celebrating globalism courtesy of the uninformed taxpayers, and now refusing to respond to congress's lawful request in their effort to fulfill their constitutional duty.
No respite; the unrelenting tyranny of an ever-growing federal govt conintues apace.
Yeah right.
So after all our protestations about the Clinton stonewalling, what did the American people gain by electing Bush?
And who are you (and the majority of voters in the red states) going to vote for president next time? Ralph Nader? John Kerry?
