I quit 2 days ago. Cold turkey after 11 years of hard-core smoking. Wish me luck!

So far, it hasn't been as bad as I've feared. A bit of trouble falling asleep, but not all that terrible.

Every urge you have that passes is one less of a finite number of urges. However, if you give in and smoke then you reset the number of urges back to the beginning.

So, everytime you get the urge to smoke look at it as a great thing because once the urge is over you have one less to go.

Good luck. I stopped in September. FWIW, here's what I did. I kept my smelly ashtrays around the house for months and occasionally took a good whiff from them. I visualized myself smoking as much as possible. I smoked 'air cigarettes'. I tried to injest as much second hand smoke as possible.

None of the above is probably the "recommended" way to stop, but I'd already spent enough of my money on the tobacco industy. I wasn't about to spend money on patches, gum, whatever. So far, it has worked. But those first 3 or 4 days are the hardest.

Good for you. Our parents finally quit after nearly 40 years' of smoking. My dad actually asked our sister, "Why didn't you tell us how bad this smoking was?" (He was referencing 2nd hand smoking and the health dangers.) As if it was up to us kids who were raised to respect our elders to confront them about their bad habits........

BTW, suggestion - take up reading for helping organize your sleep habits. I'm a big believer in reading novels at bed time. No non-fiction or how-to's. It only makes me think too hard ;-).
