I agree with you.
If you notice, most of the focus on the smoking bans is bars and restaurants, even though they cover ALL workplaces. And when it comes to businesses going under because of them the majority of them are bars, or restaurants that are sports bars.....and a lot of them are in rural areas.
I am far from a conspiracy theorist, but I look at this situation as 2 things. First as a back door to prohibition. (don't forget RWJF now controls MADD)
The second is even more insidious......the local tavern or even coffee shop, is often the mecca of community activity in rural areas. This is where folks get totgether and talk about thegoings on in the community and the world at large. Shut them down, as the bans do, that community get together disappears.........
Think about it - keep the locals from getting together and they can't foment unrest.......
I know it's far fetched, but as you said, there is something deeper than just smoking going on here.
Obviously, if smoking were abolished, everyone would live forever.
