"We would welcome a non-smoking bar and would frequent them as we do enjoy a drink, conversation, and some bar food."

Is there something preventing you from putting your own effort into opening such a bar? Is there something preventing you from risking your own capitol? If you are to lazy to take advantage of a potential market, you can't complain that the market doesn't cater to the minimal extreme potential customer.

Good point CSM. Its not unlike those that use the Windows operating system yet complain its a monopoloy and want to destroy Microsoft for that very reason. Either it works for you or it doesn't. If it doesn't, do use it (or don't go to a bar that has smoking). Don't look to government to solve all your grievances.

We do visit bars of known smoke free environment in MA in the Boston area when we happen to be there and they are quite busy. In my area where I live, the bar scene is not too extensive because of all the middle class working families with children living here where only weekends seem to be nights out for couples. But even if I thought I could make money investing in bars I wouldn't risk capitol as I know not what you are talking about unless you mean to write, capital, as that is the English word for resources or principal in an investment scenario. I have often thought about establishing a cafe, tavern type of operation as my brother has been in the restaurant business for twenty years as a chef and manager but understanding the hours involved, the uncertainty of the business, the dealing with the help with respect to stealing and bad mouthing, I decided several years ago that remaining in my business as an engineering consultant is the best course for my security.

BTW, I do not believe I ever complained about catering to the minimal extreme potential customer. These are your words and defensive if I may be allowed such perception. Folks with money to spend and not at your local dive, often do not smoke as it is an indication of lower class and lower education coupled with lower expectations in life. The era of smoking as lifestyle for those who want be "classy" is long gone since smoking as perceived by the majority is an indication of an addiction and a lower class perspective of life. Therefore, customers who wish for a smoke free environment are hardly extreme or minimal and they are not potential, they are in fact real, they are the exact customers I would want to do business with.
