10,000 pubs in Ireland, a nation of 3.5 million!! That works out to one pub for every 350 people. Not to mention the people who drink in more than one pub a day . . .

the 10,000 number is likely rounded up. The population of Ireland is now just 4m. Many of these licenses are not in use. I lived in a town with 34 licenced premises and a population of about 4000. However about half of these licenses were attached to general stores, in some cases hardware stores and not used regularly as bars, but the license was kept active by being open one day a year. Most of these licenses are spread evenly across the country so that newly heavly populated areas claim not to have enough pubs. I'd say there are about 4000 - 6000 active pubs in ireland - one for every 600 adults.
