[history]
March 19, 2004 -- It was shamrocks and stogies for some guests at a St. Patrick's Day gala who illegally fired up their cigars during the black-tie event at a Midtown hotel. That took McChutzpah since butt-buster Mayor Bloomberg and Gov. Pataki, who signed the state's anti-smoking law, both were seated on the dais at the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick's dinner at the Sheraton New York Wednesday night.

Pataki "did not see or smell any smoke at the event,"I see nothing, I smell nothing, I know nothing...Smart move by Pataki's camp.

Obviously neither the writer nor you understand that the law is to protect the little people.
Oligarchs need no such protection.

When the smoking ban was initially passed in NY State, the assembly in Albany exempted themselves from the ban.

How stupid of me, metesky!
How could I have forgotten that the Almighty Legislature and Emperor Michael the Great know far better than I how I should run my life? After all, I am a mere peasant, begging for protection from my Exalted Rulers. Right?

It's called the Sgt. Schultz method of governing. Seems to work for Pataki. (And Bloomberg)

I feel like a moron for asking this, but are you serious? Did they really exempt themselves (it's something they would do), and if so, do you have the section of the law that does so?

When the Delaware legislature enacted a smoking ban in all State-owned or leased buildings, there was one building exempt - the Capitol.
That has since changed, but it is an extremely open secret which offices one can smoke in.........

Kinda sucks when the Republican Bloomberg so brazenly demonstrates that he thinks the laws are meant only for those who aren't well-connected to him. Bloomberg is nothing but a Liberal Democrat's dream come true.

It seems like the only safe place to smoke in New York City is at an event Mayor Bloomberg is attending!
