Lee, Jackson, Stand Watie all owned slaves. Just a simple statement of fact. No judgment, no condemnation, no criticism expressed or implied. Just the incontrovertible truth that each of these men was a slave owner, a fact supported by incontrovertible evidence. But there is one among you who continues to deny these facts and other facts when presented to him. That was the individual the statement was addressed to.

If a former slave owner such as, say, Stonewall Jackson or Alexander Stephens (I don't know whether he did, but am assuming he did based on his place in society in Georgia) made some statement about the purposes of the Republic, or the meaning of a section of the Constitution, would the fact that he owned slaves place an asterisk, in your eyes, next to whatever he had said or written?
