I always read the casualty list with apprehension, and when I'm done go "Phew, no-one I knew." That's.. awful in a way. Yes and no...it's a relief to know the people you know are relatively safe.
The 22-yr-old that died from a non-combat gunshot - Paul Sturino - was the nephew of one of my wife's co-workers. It hit home, but there was always the knowledge something could happen to anyone over there. The young man whose weapon discharged was placed on suicide watch.
And all around him, life goes on...
