Hi everyone! Happy Saturday.

Sam, this thread is particularly fascinating to me. The County I live in - Fayette - and the city - Fayetteville - are named for the Marquis de LaFayette.

From Fayette County's official web site:

Fayette County was enacted as a result of the Land Lottery Draw of 1821. The land was ceded from the Creek Indian Nation and five new counties were created: Fayette, Henry, Houston, Dooly and Monroe. Fayette is therefore an original county (not created from other counties) and the 49th county in Georgia.

At this time, the county went up to present-day Atlanta and over to the other side of Jonesboro. Four counties have been carved in part from us, Campbell (now Fulton, DeKalb, Clayton and Spalding).

Because some of the new settlers were Revolutionary War veterans, it is surmised that they were the ones instrumental in naming the county for Marquis de LaFayette, who fought alongside General George Washington in that war.

Fayetteville was named as the county seat in 1823 and the present-day courthouse in the town square was built in 1825. It remains the oldest courthouse in Georgia and is still in municipal use.

It remained the only city until the 1900's, although there were a number of small communities that had names.

Incorporated cities at the present time are: Fayetteville, Peachtree City, Tyrone, Brooks, and Woolsey.

During The War Between The States, cavalry activity took place in the middle of the county. A several hundred Confederate wagon supply train was burned just two miles west of Fayetteville and one of the last cavalry skirmishes took place the next day. This activity was an indirect part of The Battle of Atlanta.

In the 1930's, Margaret Mitchell spent time in Fayette County researching facts for her GONE WITH THE WIND. Her great Grandfather, Phillip Fitzgerald, came to Fayette County in the 1830's and the Fitzgeralds were the prototypes for the O'Hara in the book. They are buried in the Fayetteville City Cemetery.

The Holliday family was from Fayette County and one of "Doc" Holliday's cousins married a Fitzgerald, making the famed old west character a "kissin' cousin" of Margaret Mitchell.

Peachtree City was enacted in 1959 and is the only successful pre-planned city in the southeast. Be sure to note the water fountain in its City Plaza, a donation of all the Japanese companies who have opened companies in Peachtree City.

Thanks Jen.

I wonder how many people know who their county or parrish is named after.

Never knew the Hollidays were from Georgia.

Big tanks, big camels and lots of sand. They're still in the dark ages...oh, unless you're the leader in your golden palace.

Glad to see a fellow freeper who has ties with the 293rd. My nephew Jeremy is in D Co. of the 1 battlion 293rd. Thursday we received a phone call from him, he plans on coming home about a month after the main unit, he is staying behind to load equipment. It has been a long wait, we just could not be any prouder of the guys. When he finally gets home I plan on driving from Pennsylvania to Indiana or Camp Atturbury, (where-ever I need to) to great him. Thank Karl for his service, they have made us proud.

God Bless America and All Those Who Defend Her!

Sam, I enjoyed this thread muchly. I've been away for a couple months, and I was glad to re-join FR with a jump into the foxhole.

The Marquis! Wow, so much there. I believe there's a book out last year or two just on his 1820s tour of the U.S. It's way down on my "to read" list, but there it is. I'd add to your history by way of more stuff on two episodes: 1) the attempted "coup" by Gates & Co., and Lafayette's loyalty to Washington; and 2) his mistreatment by the French Revolution.

His story in the French revolution marks its every boundary. I don't know enough to tell more now, but it's worth keeping an eye on.

Also, I believe that Washington adopted him as his son. That true? (Did I miss it above?).

Thanks for the ping, and so glad to see you going strong.

Welcome back, Nicollo.

I never heard about Washington adopting Lafayette, but then I've never really studied Lafayette in depth.

Hard to believe it's been almost 9 months of doing the Foxhole. I even mananged to pick up a partner who's been doing a great job and helping to keep the Foxhole going.

It's the readers who really keep the Foxhole going though, it's be awful lonely here without the feedback.

Sam, your pace is hard to keep up with, but the material and the effort behind it are unreal, a true gem, worthy of and among the very best of FR.

I join when I can, which is irregular. That doesn't mean that I haven't enjoyed or learned when I haven't posted. One of the difficult aspects of FR posting is to know if one is a tree falling in the woods or a posting in town hall. Just remember that the number of replies is not an indicator of a thread's impact.

Many thanks, and godspeed to your good work!

Thanks for the kind words, I know there are enough people who read and enjoy and never or rarely post. It's always a joy for Snippy and I when we finally hit a subject that gets someone to reply and share an experience or a family members' experience. Plus as a bonus, each thread we do, we learn something new while researching or from feedback.
