One of the main bottlenecks were LST's there were never enough to go around. Considering that at the outbreak of war the LST, LCVP and other landing craft hadn't been invented yet, this statement is only too true.
The late Stephen Ambrose expressed the opinion that perhaps most important invention of World War II was the Higgins Boat. I'm inclined to believe that.

If you ever read anything about Operation Sealion, the plans for the German invasion of England, you'd be surprised by how thew Germans jury rigged all kinds of craft for landing craft. I don't see how it could ever have worked.
Specialized landing craft made all the difference in amphibious invasions.
