Yes, they were tough planes.
The pic I'm thinking of, and I'm sure Jinx knows what I'm talking about, is of a plane whose tail has been near cutoff by a flak round that wentoff within the fuselage.
Bulged the floor down, the roof up.
The walls were gone. Except for the roof and floor, only a few stringers were holding the tail on.
Amazingly, it made it home. Quite a tough piece of hardware.
